Robert was born about 1499 in Sanquhar Castle, Dumfrieshire, Scotland. Robert's father was 7th Laird of Sanquhar Sir Robert Crichton and his mother was Marion Maxwell. His paternal grandparents were 6th Laird of Sanquhar Sir Robert Crichton and Marion Stuart. He had a brother and a sister, named John and Margaret. He was the second oldest of the three children.-
