Walter de Gant, 2nd son, succeeded his father and was a person of great valour and piety, who at an advanced age, commanded a brave regiment of Flemings and Normans in the celebrated conflict with the Scots at Northallerton in Yorkshire, known in history as the Battle of the Standard, "Where," says Dugdale, "by his eloquent and prudent conduct, the whole army received such encouragement that the Scots were utterly vanquished." He married Maud, daughter of Stephen, Earl of Brittany, and had Gilbert, Robert, Geoffrey, Alice, Matilda and Agnes, who married William de Mohun.
