Hist. of Hadley: In the differences of the Hartford Church, one of the largest
and most eminent in New England, WILLIAM LEWIS. The minority were attached to
the Congregational way of church order as professed and practiced under Mr.
Hooker; adhered to the Cambridge Platform and were opposed to all important
changes. They were sometimes called strict Congregationalists. William Lewis
was on of the principal members of the minority. They formed a union with the
church in Wethersfield. This withdrawal appears to have taken place in the
later part of 1657, or early 1658. It is apparent, a part of 1658 that the
minority of the church becan to think seriously of removing to the colony of
Mass. He signed the agreement of those who attended to rem to Hadley 18 Apr
1659 residing at Hartford at the time. On Oct 1660, he signed the agreement to

Town attending Court Mar 1661. 1663 res. east of main street between Peter
Tilton and Richard Goodman. His estate valued at 150 lbs. He was on 12
Dec.1661 committee to oversee the building of the Meeting House. In Mar 1666
William Lewis of Hadley was presented for settling strong liquers without
license and fined. It appeared that he was induced to do this, as no one in
Hadley had liberty to sell liquors.
Townsmen, were called Selectmen, after a few years. There were five from the
beginning chosen by the engagers, in Nov. 1659, they were chosen at Norwottuck,

other employment. Signed the 1669 petition against takes in Hadley. Signed

problem of having 2 ministers. Appeared for William Goodwin in court 1669 when
tried for death of Samuel Nash, child. Signed petition Oct.1672 for enlarging

Northampton, Deputy and Representative of Hadley 1662, townsman 1660,1669.
