Because she was his cousin, Pope Gergory V would not sanction the marriage and Robert was excommunicated. However, after long negotiations with the new Pope Silvester II the marriage was annulled.

Robert was born in Orleans, Loiret, France. He died on July 20th, 1031 in Meulan, Yvelines, Isle-de-France, France. He was buried in Saint Denis Basilica.
