Sarah or Sarai, Old Testament figure, half-sister and wife of Abraham (see Genesis 20: 12). Sarah accompanied Abraham during all of his wanderings, including to Canaan and Egypt, where he was driven out for misrepresenting Sarah as his sister. The Bible records that her beauty was greatly admired by the kings of Egypt and Gerar. Unable to bear children, she gave Abraham her Egyptian handmaid, Hagar, as a concubine. But when Hagar gave birth to Ishmael, jealousy developed between the two women. Later, at the biblical age of 90, Sarah gave birth to Isaac (see Genesis 17: 17).
