A gentle andbeautiful lady, Isabel was also the wealthiest heiress in England.
King Richard the Lionheart rewarded Willliam's steadfast service by marrying him in 1189 to the 16-year-old heiress of Richard Strongbow de Clare, who had led the Norman invasion and conquest of Ireland. Through her, William inherited all of Strongbow's lands, becoming one of the wealthiest lords in all of England. Williamand Isabel lived at various times in Pembroke, Chepstow and Carlow Castles. Isabel is buried at Tintern Abbey, Monmouthshire.
President Rutherford B. Hayes is a descendant.
