Narrative

Had 11 children to his first wife, Catherine Marker. Had 8 children to Elizabeth

Andrew Adams, according to the 1850 census, was born in Mar yland, and from what appeared to be a Fanily Bible transcri ption, was born on May 8, 1781. Andrew was married first t o Catherine Marker, born 1782, and then to Elizabeth Weave r born 1803. He had a total of 20 children, although it i s not clear when he remarried. When Mary was born in 1821 , Catherine was 39 and Elizabeth 18. When Magdalena was bor en in 1824, Catherine was 42 and Elizabeth 21. Any later, a nd Catherine would be too old to bear children. Any earlier , and Elizabeth would be too young.

In the 1810 and 1820 census, he's found in Woodberry Twp, i n the northeast corner of Bedford Co. In 1830 and 1840, And rew was in Conemaugh Twp, Cambria Co. He was last found i n 1850 in Jackson Twp, Cambria Co. I have not found any dee ds, wills or probate in Cambria Co. It may be possible tha t he was actually in Indiana Co in 1850. He name is mention ed as a buyer at an estate sale near Strongstown, Indiana C o in 1842, a few miles west of the county line, Many of And rew's descendants are found in this area. The northern par t of Jackson Twp reached up into this area near Strongstown .

In looking for where Adams and Markers were both found in M aryland, I believe the best chance is in Carroll Co. Severa l families from that area came to Jackson Twp, including Ra ger, Teeter and Albaugh. Teeters and Albaughs also lived ne ar Andrew in Woodberry Twp, Bedford Co.

I have researched Adams in Frederick Co, Maryland (of whic h the west part of Carroll once belonged). Martin Adam, o f Steinweiler, Pfalz, Germany, left a will in Frederick C o in 1754. He mentions his son Valentine, who was married i n Steinweiler to Margaret Lingenfelter, daughter of John Ge orge 1700-1777, many of who's family later moved to Bedfor d Co. Valentine's will in 1790 mentions sons Andrew and Geo rge, and Andrew is mentioned in George's bankruptcy hearing s in 1792. Valentine owned several parcels of land, includi ng some in northern Frederick Co. Baptismal records at th e Evangelical Reformed Church of Frederick show Johannes An dreas Adam born 26 Aug 1760. Our Andrew J. Adams was bor n 8 May 1781. This church does not have existing records fr om 1781, nor have I found records in other parts of Frederi ck Co. However, I do think this J. Andrew Adams born 1760 i s an excellent candidate for the father of Andrew J. Adam s born 1781.

Andrew Adams' children came of age while living in the John stown area. Of those listed in the Family Bible, not all ha ve yet been found in other records. Several the sons of who m records have been found found work on the canals. John, A ndrew Jr and Jacob lived with Frederick in the 1850 censu s in Johnstown, the three younger listed as boatmen. Afte r the opening of the railroad and subsequent closing of th e canal in the late 1850's, the boys headed north to Indian a Co to find work on the farms near their father.
Two of Andrew's sons, and two of his grandsons, married dau ghters of John B. Douglass of Susquehanna Twp, in northwes t Cambria Co, 40 miles north of Johnstown.

Henry, born 1803, married Susan Bollinger and is buried a t Wesley Chapel Cem in East Taylor, and according to his so n Henry Jr's obituary owned a farm near there. Henry Jr 182 6-1889 married Maria Douglass 1825-1912. His brother Willia m born 1824 married Elizabeth Douglass born 1829, and live d in Green Twp, Indiana Co. One of their children was Anid a Belle who married Jacob Dishong. Four of Henry and Susann a's daughters married sons of Michael bennet and Ssuannah S trong of Strongstown.

John, born 1810, married Rebecca Miller and had a farm nea r Strongtown in Pine Twp, Indiana Co.

Frederick, born 1813, married Sophia, and was living in Con emaugh Twp, Cambria Co in the 1840 and 1850 census. I hav e not found them or their chidlren after 1850 - perhaps the y left the area.
