Regarded as the foremost knight of his
time. by whom the young King John chose to be knighted, ha

predominantly military career. He was one of four barons who
along with William Longchamp, bishop of Ely who were
constituted a council of regency during Richard's absence on
crusade, and he occasionally sat on the bench at Westminste
r.
He administered his vast lordship in Ireland, which his
wife had brought him and succeeded in securing the adhesio

the Irish barons to a declaration supporting King John in h

quarrel with Pope Innocent III. He consistently supported t

King and was with him at Runnymede in June, 1215.
