Patrick de Evereux, being steward of the household to the Empress Maud, was advanced by that princess to the dignity of Earl of Salisbury, and was one of the subscribing witnesses, as such, to the agreement made between King Stephen and Henry, Duke of Normandy, in the 18th year of that monarch's reign [1153]. In the 10th Henry II [1164], his lordship was a witness to the recognition of the ancient laws and liberties of England, and in two years afterwards, upon the aid then assessed for marrying the king's dau., he certified his knights' fees at seventy-eight and two-fifths. The earl being the king's lieutenant in Aquitaine and captain general of his forces there, was slain in 1167 by Guy de Lusignan upon his return from a pilgrimage to St. James of Compostella, and was s. by his son, William de Evereux.
