Islamic Names
Numerous spellings abound, and no attempt is made to set forthall of the possible variations. Examples include "abd al" beingthe same as "abd ar" being the same as "Abdul", or Quraish andKoreish being the same. Literally dozens of other branches existwhich account for dynasties of Egypt, Iran (Persia), Iraq,Yemen, Morocco, and many other nations. Many of the brancheshave names such as Umayyids, Abassids, Fatimids, etc., whichusually take their name from prominent forbears such as Umayya,Abbas, and Fatima. Note the use of "ben", meaning "son of", apatronymic often omitted.
