Norr: Created Lord despenser, later Earl of Winchester.
He was hanged and then drawn and quartered, the first man to suffersuch a fate in England. His mistake was supporting King Edward II, who faced a revolt by some barons, led by Edward's wife (who hated him) and her paramour. Hugh, his son (a favorite of the king) and Edward werecaptured. The son was hanged, and Edward was brutally murdered in prison eight monthslater.
Edward II was an incompetent king, and the barons resented theinfluence the Despensers had with him.
Roots: Sir Hugh le Despenser, hanged 27 Oct. 1326, Earl of Winchester.
[Some confusion here. Were both Hugh and his son hanged, drawn and quartered? Or only one of them? And which one?].
