Per Cockayne's "Complete Peerage" (EU, p. 151-152), he was an illigitimate son
of DUKE RICHARD, who gave him the countship of Heimois. He rebelled against
his half brother, DUKE RICHARD II OF NORMANDY and was imprisoned at Rouen. He
escaped, submitted to Richard, and was pardoned and made Count of Eu, of which
office his nephew, GILBERT, COUNT OF BRIONNE, ancestor of the family of Clare,
had been recently deprived.
