-0800There was a query about Baldred king of kent a while ago, and asIdidn't see any reply on my newserver, I'll post this. Sorry ifthis has already been dealt with.A King Baldred was driven over
the Thames from Kent by WestSaxon forces under Aethelwulf son of King Egbert in 825 (as reportedinthe Anglo-Saxon Chronicle). His family or descent is not known, but Barbara York in her book Kings
and Kingdoms of earlyAnglo-Saxonengland, p119 (I think) says he was probably a relative ofBeornwulfking of Mercia 823-25, who was defeated by Egbert the same year.Kenthad been since the 790's
(despite several revolts) a sub-kingdomof the kings of Mercia who usually appointed a relative as itsking.Beornwulf was perhaps related to the Beornred king of Mercia whowas killed in 757, and the
family of Beorhtwulf king of Mercia839-52and Burgred 852-74, but the specific links required to make thismore than a plausible theory have not yet been worked out.Matt
