  There is real confusion about the connection with the Cooper family.  The Cooper family genea logy
  lists William Hibbs and Ann Carter as parents of Hannah Hibbs, wife of James Cooper(1729-1795 ).
  "Carter Cousins" does not list Hannah as one of the children of William and Ann Carter Hibbs.
  Jonathan Cooper and "John Smith, esq.," a genealogy of the Hibbs family, lists Sarah Hibbs as
  grandparents of James Fenimore Cooper.  None of them agree.  I have followed the Cooper tradi tion.
