PAGE p 412REF: Sharon Kay Penman "The Reckoning": Conspired (Jan 1274) with his son Owain d e la Pole & Dafydd ap Gruffydd Lord Denbigh to murder Llywelyn ap Gruffydd, Dafydd's own brot her. He & his son were brought to trial before Llywelyn & admitted conspiracy w/out implicat ing Dafydd, but in October 1274 Dafydd's involvement was sufficiently rumored to bring him to o before the judgement seat of his brother. Llywelyn gave him until Martinmas to produce wit nesses to "prove" he was not in Powys conspiring with the Lord of Powys & his son on the date s in question. But on 31 Oct 1274, Owain de la Pole, who was a hostage in Llywelyn's hands f or his father's good faith, confessed all to Llywelyn's Seneschal. Llywelyn issued a writ fo r Dafydd's arrest. Dafydd fled to England with Gruffydd ap Gwenwynwyn where Edward, despite b eing allied with Llywelyn, provided for them generously at Shrewsbury & they began to forge r aiding parties into Wales, despite the fact that Llywelyn had conquered all of Powys & had bu rned Gruffydd ap Gwenwynwyn's seat to the ground. In April 1277, Roger de Mortimer took Llywe lyn's castle at Donforwyn & restored Gruffydd ap Gwenwynwyn to power in Powys.
