Joseph's father was Charles Elliott Goad and his mother was Harriet Reilly. His paternal grandparents were Samuel Thomas Goad and Jane M. He was the fourth of six children. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Goad, Goad, Goad, Clara and Harriet. He died, at the age of 53, in 1896.
