"WEDDING of HEMPENSTALLL and DUFFY
At St. Joseph's Cathedral, Rockhampton on Wednesday morning, 31st August, 1938, the wedding of Catherine Ann (Kitty), second daughter of Mrs. M. E. Duffy, Corberry Street, Rockhampton, and the late Mr. T. Duffy, Barcaldine, to Reginald George, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. G. Hempenstall, Gladstone Road, Rockhampton, was celebrated at nuptial mass. The Rev. Father D. Keneally officiated, assisted by the Rev. Father M. Dolan. Miss T. Liddy presided at the organ.
As she entered the cathedral escorted by her brother (Mr. T. Duffy), who gave her away, the bride looked charming in rich ivory French lace over magnolia satin. Lovely in its simplicity, her gown was cut on Empire lines and featured a train trimmed with orange blossoms, falling from the middle panel of the skirt. Her Honiton lace veil (lent by Mrs. J. W. D. Higgins) was mounted on tulle and held in place by sprays of orange blossoms and her shower bouquet was of arum lilies, freezias, and Cecil Brunner roses. Her only ornament was a diamond and ruby studded bracelet, which had been worn by her mother on her wedding day.
The bride's attendants were her two sisters, Misses Cecelia Duffy and Irene Duffy whose Princess frocks of old gold silk taffeta were finished with Peter Pan collars and tiny buttons from the neck to the hemline. Sashes of duck-egg blue matched the trimming on their hats of gold. They carried shower bouquets of autumn shaded Iceland poppies and Golden Gleam nasturtiums.
Mr. Kevin Hempenstall and Mr. Terence Hempenstall (brothers of the bridegroom) carried out the duties of best man and groomsman respectively.
At the reception, held at Stewart's Cafe, the decorations followed the colour scheme chosen by the bridesmaids, and pride of place was given to the three-tiered wedding cake, its ornamental top of trailing artificial flowers having adorned the bride's mother's wedding cake. The guests were received by the mother of the bride, who chose a black self-pat- terned georgette sheer, with a hat to tone. Golden roses formed her posy. The bridegroom's mother, who wore a tailored costume of nigger-brown self-striped serge, with beige accessories and a matching hat and who carried a posy of autumn shaded freezias and pansies, assisted in receiving the guests.
When leaving for the honeymoon, which is being spent on a cruise to the Hinchinbrook Channel, the bride travelled in a jumper suit of red earth crepe romaine, to which she added a brown hat and matching accessories."
