Daughter of Mason CLARK.
In 1873, as a ‘very old offender’ Sarah, of Fetter Lane, Hull, is given seven days’ hard labour for being drunk. Four weeks later [21.10.70] she received the same sentence after being ‘five times before the court this year’.
Not deterred, a repeat is reported 18.11.70. She reappears in print as a ‘disreputable-looking woman’ for a 17th appearance 22.10.80. Now she is merely fined forty shillings, with repeat prescriptions reported 25.1.82, 8.4.82, and 10.7.82.
Sarah finally received her comeuppance on 17.7.85 when, on her thirtieth appearance in court (and now of 6, Edward Court, New George St), she received two months’ hard labour (presumably, at last, time to dry out) after stabbing her next-door neighbour who had refused to give her a halfpenny to buy drink.
