- INTRODUCTION
This is an index of the original Birth Registers of the Bolton Union workhouses at Fletcher Street in Great Bolton, and Fishpool in Farnworth, from 11 August 1839 to 6 June 1887.
The index is arranged alphabetically by surname, each surname being further subdivided alphabetically by Christian name. In those cases where there are two or more identical names the order is by date. Where two surnames, or two different spellings of the same surname, have been entered in the Birth Register both have been indexed and cross-referenced.
The Registers are held by the Archives Department, and have the following references:
11 August 1839 - 21 September 1847 GBO 5/9 (Fletcher Street)
2 October 184'] - 22 July 1861 GBO 5/2 (Fletcher Street)
23 October 1861 - 17 January 1866 GBO 5/3 (Fishpool)
30 April 1866 - 6 June 1887 GBO 5/4 (Fishpool)
GBO 5/9 also contains the Register of Deaths, 8 July 1839 - 22 September 1847. The first volume of births GBO 5/9 contains information listed under the headings:
date of birth; sex; names of parents; to which Parish belonging; legitimate or illegitimate; when baptised; name of the child; remarks.
The later volumes do not have a column labelled "legitimate or illegitimate" and, where recorded, this information is included in the "remarks" column, together with other occasional pieces of information e.g. "twins", "still born".
The full entry is given in this index except for "date of baptism".
In some cases uncertainty existed regarding the spelling of surnames. These were checked by referring to the Bolton Union Workhouse Registers of Admissions/Discharges and/or the Creed Registers. These are indicated in the Index by (Adm./Dis. Reg.) and (Cr. Reg.). In these cases where the names differed, all the variations are given but are only located under the entry as given by the Birth Register.
If a reference of interest is located in this Index a check of the corresponding Admission/Discharge Register (some of which are missing) may reveal the names and ages of other members, usually children, of the same family.
