Married James Grundy, and then continued to live with father at Mather's fold, Little Hulton in 1841.  Betty named her first son Ellis, named after her father.

In 1851, James and Elizabeth were publicans and had (and  were living at) the Railway Tavern, Green Lane, Worsley.  By 1861, then had moved to the Shaving Lane Public House is Worsley (then publican and farmer). 1766 - 1824 Sally Smethurst 58 58 Sally's father was John Smethurst (of Deane) 1802 - 1804 Catherine Mather 2 2 The Catherine Mather that died in 1875, aged 72 was another, a widow, a Catherine Mather (Wid, 71) was in Westhoughton in 1871 with her son Peter Hartley (47). 1794 - 1801 Mary Mather 7 7 1796 - 1857 Thomas Mather 61 61 ~1738 - 1808 Betty Mayo 70 70 After husband Peter died in 1789, Betty would most probably have remarried.  The most likely match is a marriage 18-Dec-1792 to Thomas Halliwell, a widower (although Betty Mather is recorded as a spinster). 1758 - 1758 James Mather 1756 - 1756 Peter Mather 1692 Guliolius (William) Mather Is Guliolius the latin for William?  A William Mather Married Abigail in 1717, and Abigail Uxor (wife) of Guliemi Mather died in 1732.

Having the only early Mather headstone he was probably an important man, and also has strong connections to Liverpool where all 4 children were baptised.

John Mort (son) and Thomas Mather of Middle Hulton were the executors of Robert Mort (a tanner) will of 1728.

Either Thomas and Alice didnt have children, or they had Daniel, Thomas, William and Elizabeth (1706 - 1712), all baptised at St Nicholas, Liverpool.  There are no known Thomas and Alice marriages at Liverpool (only one other in Warrington in 1701). At Easter 1637 (Archive ref QSB/1/183/78): TURTON & BLACKROD -  convictions of Thomas Grenehalgh and Ralph Mather for unlawful selling of ale. ~1610 James Mather According to Henry's will, Richard was Ralph and James were his youngest sons. ~1740 - 1806 Thomas Halliwell 66 66 Thomas was a widower when he married Betty. ~1738 - 1789 Peter Mather 51 51 Margaret Barlow ~1705 Alice Harrison 1703 Peter Mather 1735 Sarah (Sara) Mather Sarah is a daughter of Peter Mather for Little Hulton (south of Bolton), so probably not the Peter Mather of Turton. ~1560 - 1604 Gabriel Mather 44 44 Grabriel's mother was Ann.  She was left "one paire of gooses" in his will, so his mother Ann must have survived him.  He also had a brother Thomas and a sister Margerie.

Probably as mother (and borthers and sister) survived, Gabried was about 35 to 45 when he died, and this sons had not married (as no grandghildren are mentioned in his will). D. >1604 Margaret Howell Margaret, and her father John Howell are refered to in Gabriel's will. ~1590 Henry Mather 1723 Jacob Mather Jacob had a sister Elizabeth, born 1730. ~1793 - 1793 Betty Mather 1767 - 1854 Alice Mort Toppings 87 87 In 1851, Alice Toppings (84) was Henry Mather's mother-in-law, living with the family at Little Hulton.  She is also refered to as "Alice Mort Topping", mother of Henry Mather (on FindAGrave website)
 1769 - 1835 James Mather 66 66 James was the son of another James from Middle Hulton, but who was this James?  There are no other childrens baptisms at Deane, of James Mather.  There are baptisms at Leigh of James (& Sarah) in 1767,69,72,73,74,75 but these must be another as they overlap our James baptised in 1769.  Likewise James and Mary of Radcliffe with baptisms 1766 and 1769 are another. ~1650 John Mather 1748 - 1829 Ann Mather 80 80 1743 - ~1827 Daniel Stones 84 84 1740 - 1740 Thomas Mather This Thomas must have died an infant, as another Thomas was baptised a few years later. 1743 Samuel Mather 1745 Thomas Mather 1751 Betty Mather 1756 - 1800 Harry Mather 44 44 Harry's baptism is for Middle Hulton, wheras all the other children are Little Hulton. 1757 - 1829 Noah Mather 72 72 Noan and Mary lived in Little Hulton, using Peel Chapel (Deane) for their family baptisms.  They may have started at Middle Hulton where John, their first child is recorded. 1746 John Mather 1715 John Mather Peter's baptism shows the father as John of Hulton. Sally's mother was Alice Toppings (b.1767), living with her at Little Hulton in 1851, a pauper aged 84.  She must have re-married. 1835 - 1897 Levi Mather 62 62 There was also a John Mather and Sarah Lamb of Pendleton (who between 1854-64 had William, Edward, James, Martha and Samuel).

In 1861, Levi was a Collier living at Higginson Brow, Pendleton when William was baptised.

Levi had married and left home by 1861.  He was with wife Sarah and 4 children, next door to Nathan at Pendleton.

 1837 - 1905 Joseph Mather 68 68 1840 - 1905 Henry Mather 65 65 1841 - 1880 James Mather 39 39 1846 - 1916 Andrew Mather 70 70 In 1868, Andrew married Betty Grundy continued to live in Little Hulton, initially with Bettys parents.  They had several children including John Henry (b.1871). Levi (1873-74), and four other died young, aged one to two years and are buried at Wharton Presbyterian Chapel.  At leat five others survived. 1848 Mary Mather 1851 John Mather Already a Coal Miner, aged 10 in 1861 1856 - 1906 Peter Mather 50 50 Peter's mother Sarah was 50 when she had Peter!

Peter married Esther and had a daughter Annie (b.1880) and likely more. 1831 - 1918 Sarah Aldred 87 87 Saral lived with her daughter Sarah Alice in 1901 and 1911

Sarah Mather (79) was living with Jonathan (44) and Mary Alice (45) Gregson in 1911 1829 Nathan Mather Nathan was the son of Nathan and Catherine from Adlington, aged 14 in 1841. 1832 William Mather 1833 Mally Mather Matty or Mally?  Henry's mother was Matty! 1868 - 1885 Sarah Mather 17 17 1834 - 1840 James Mather 6 6 James died young in 1840, aged about 6.  Another James was baptised the following year.  He probably died at Pendleton Street, Pendleton, Eccles where the family were in 1841. 1858 Esther Mather 1844 - 1848 Alice Mather 3 3 1844 - 1902 Deborah Crompton 58 58 Deborah Mather had her brother Thomas Crompton with the family in 1871. 1706 Daniel Mather 1707 Thomas Mather 1710 William Mather 1712 Elizabeth Mather 1854 Henry Mather 1856 - 1886 Jane Mather 30 30 1859 - 1920 James Mather 61 61 In 1891, James (32) was a coal miner living in Little Hulton with Wife Elizabeth (31) and their three children Thomas Henry (7), Sarah Ann (3) and Ada (1).

In 1901, James was a Contractor for Roofing in Coal Mine, still married to Elizabeth (both 42), now living at Culcheth, Leigh, where they had recently moved as only their last child Harrold was borh there in 1900. In 1911, Thomas Henry (16) nd his mother Mary Ann Mather were living with relatives Joseph and Elizabeth Brown in Newton. 1897 - 1986 Agnes Mather 89 89 Agnes married James Sharrock (1894-1942).  They had 6 daughters.  They were still alive in Wigan in 1939. 1900 - 1971 James Mather 71 71 In 1911, James (aged 10) and his father were living in Carmarthenshire, both working as Surface Banksmen at the local colliery.  His molder brother Thomas H married Agnes Smith there in 1918. 1904 Mary Ann Mather 1909 - 1957 Joseph Mather 48 48 1869 - 1932 Henry Derbyshire 63 63 1779 - 1847 Simon Stones 68 68 1786 - 1834 Mary Hardman 48 48 1809 James Grundy In 1841, James (30) was a (Black)smith with Betty at Mather Fold, Little Hulton. 1860 - 1943 James Tonge (aka Mather) 82 82 In 1861, James (10 mo) was recorded as James Mort, living at Pendleton with James and Ellen Mort.  More likely he was with William Wane, loger (16 and possibly an uncle) and parents Thomas and Agnes Mort (i.e. should be Tonge). There may be two families living together.

James lead a double life, a bigamist with two families.  First he married Janet. After 1888 he started a family with a younger Mary Ann Ashall and between 1895 and 1909 had 5 more children by her.  Interestingly, both partnerships had a daughter Agnes (his mother's name).

In 1880, James, 20, Engineer, of 6 Radle Street, Pendleton, son of Thomas Tonge a fireman married Janet Hepburn (Scottish), daughter of Daniel, a Dyer.

Between 1881 and 1888, James and Janet had Agnes (who died), Margaret and James.  The family split up and Janet went off to live with her brother.

In 1891, James, a coal miner (born Pendleton, aged 30), is boarding with Samuel and Jane Cook (and their two infants) at St. Helens.

In 1901, James and Mary Ann are at "Miners Back Cottages", Newton in Makerfield.

Sometime after 1901, James and Mary Ann split up when Mary Ann found out about James's other family.  By 1911 they were well seperated!

In 1911, James Mather (48) and his son James (10) were boarding with the Twist family in Bettys, Carmarthenshire, both Surface Banksmen working at the local Colliery.

In 1937, James was a "Tonge" again, living in Salford, born 13-June-1860, a retired miner, and widow.

In 1943, James died in a poor house in Manchester and was buried in a communal poor grave. The death has him as James Mather "otherwise" Tonge. 1862 - 1928 Janet Hepburn 66 66 In 1891, Janet Tonge (27) was living with her brother William Hepburn, a coal miner (both from Scotland). 1881 - 1881 Agnes Tonge 1886 - 1959 Margaret Tonge 73 73 In 1891, Margaret Mather (aged 3) was with her grandmother Ann Howill (63)  1888 - 1917 James Tonge 29 29 In 1891, James Tonge, aged 2, and sister Margaret were with their mother Janet (and her brother)

In 1911, James was boarding in Middleton with Eliza Thompson and her family.

Army records show James P67512 married Helena Brown (spinster) 10 June 1911 at the Baptist Chapel, Temple Street, Middleton.  He was living at 48 Albert Street, Middleton in Dec 1915, and had a son George Edwin (b.30-July-1911).  James died of wounds in action 14.6.17

Their son George went on to marry Dorris Halliwell. In 1861, Edward (17, Coal Drawer) was with parents John and Ellen at Atherton. His father was a provision dealer. 1799 James Mather 1806 Elizabeth Mather 1807 - 1864 Ann Stones 57 57 Ann was the daughter of Simon Stones, a weaver 1809 - 1877 Joshua Grundy 68 68 Between 1844 and 1850, Betsey, William, Mary and Ellen Grundy were born at Little Hulton, with mother's maiden name MATHER.

In 1851, Joshua Grundy (42) was head, unmarried, living with Betty Mather (36, servant) and her 6 "Mather" children, the youngest being Ellen Mather, aged 1 in Little Hulton. 

In 1861, Joshua Grundy was 52, still with Ann Mather and her children, but now the married name is Thornby.  Johsua Mather (21), Mary Grundy (14), Ellen Grundy (11), and 5 other children are all now named Thornby.

In 1851, Ann was 15 and a dressmaker, a "lodger" with her mother Betty and other siblings.  Joshua Grundy was head, a carter for hire.

In 1853 when she married, Ann was the daughter of Joshua Mather, a Carter.  However, this was Josiah Grundy, as her mother Betty never merried him. 1838 Thomas Mather Thomas was not with his mother Betty in 1841 although baptised son of Betty in 1838.

In 1861, Betty was named Betty Thornby and all the children were named Thornby, not Mather or Grundy.  However, all births between 1851 and 1861 are mother (and father) named Mather, so all are illegitimate, probably Joshua Grundy's who Betty is still living with.

In 1871, Betty (52) is now named Betty Thomley.  She is still with her 5 youngest: Mailce (19), Martha (18), Robert (16), William (14) and Sarah Jane (12).

In 1853, William was 21, a brick layer when he married Ann Mather.

In 1861, William and Ann (both 26) were at Dunkirk, Little Hulton with James (7), Elizabeth (3) and Alice (1).

Ann's mother was Betty Mather and her father James Thornley.  Between 1864 and 1870 Ann's maiden name changes from Mather to THORNLEY for the births of Jacob, Ellen and Joseoh, and then back again for the birth of John Robert in 1872.

In 1848, Mary had a daughter Hannah Ashton.  The child survived, but Mary died just 18y old.  Its likely Hannah was brought up by her grand-parents. 1864 Jacob Ashton 1866 Ellen Ashton 1870 Joseph Ashton 1803 - 1864 Henry Mather 61 61 Henry is a possible son of John and Matty, born Atherton 25 Feb 1804, or he more likely the bastard child of Alice Mather of Little Hulton, baptised 8 March 1803.  Alice maried James Toping the following month.

Henry recorded his place of birth as Little Hulton, which is where he was in 1851 and 1861, but in 1841 was a Coal Minor at Pendleton Street, Pendleton, Eccles.

The Henry from Windle, St Helens is another who died 13 Mar 1839, aged 36.  There another Henry from Eccleston, Wigan who died 29 Dec 1850, aged 47, so all three born about 1803. 1836 James Mather James was aged 4 in 1841 at Little Hulton, but not with assumed mother Betty in 1851.
