Relative of: Another John and Mary Eddowes family from Wrexham, probably related as Charlotte used as Mother and daughters name. Also, both John's Maltsters, and married at Wrexham and Brymbo.
Lives with: Mary (mother of Esther) was living with Richard and Esther and family in Birkenhead in 1861.
Relative of: John (and wife Mary) married & Thomas (and wife Charlotte) all buried at Brymbo
Representative of: In 1853, Edmund and Mary Eddowes (who had recently married) were marriage witnesses for Esther Eddowes
1803 - 1868

John and Mary are my 3x great grandparents.
Marriage bonds for John and Mary are recorded at St. Asaph, Wales 5 Jan and they later married at Brymbo 13 March 1826.
In 1861, living in Birkenhead.
Had boarders Mathew (b.1847) and William (b.1844) and visitors Mary (b.1839) and Thomas (b.1839) Eddowes. There are probably sons/daughters (or wives of sons) of Mary.
An Ancestry tree, has Mary's maiden name as Holt, but I find no records to support this.
1797 - 1852
John
Eddowes
55
55
John and Mary are my 3x great grandparents. John is from the Beast Market, Wrexham.
13 Mar 1826, John Eddowes, a Maltster married Mary Whitefield by licence.
In 1827, Elizabeth's baptism also shows John a Malster
There is another John Eddowes from Wrexham b.1814, also a Maltster, also married to Mary (see 1851 Manchester census).
9 May 1852, John died aged 55. The closest birth match is another John from Worthen, Shropshire, son of John and Elizabeth. He was born about a year after John and Elizabeth Ford maried at Worthern in 1797. There are no more baptisms there, so the family may have moved on (i.e. to Wrexham). However, that family moved to Westbury and had Thomas (1799), Edward (1801), William (1803), Sanuel (1805), George (1807), Ann (1810). This in not our John!
An older John Eddowes had the Tannery in the Beast Market by the Old National School. It was formerly held by William Poynton, tanner, and after by Mr Walter Jones. Died Nov 19 1799, and was buried at Marchwiel (from Wrexham Parish History).
In 1827, when Elizabeth was baptised, the family were at Bank Street, Wrexham. They were also at Bank Street when the twins were born, this time John shown as a Carrier. Must be the same John, as same adress.
In 1835, when Esther was baptised, John was a farmer at Common Wood (Gresford).
In 1851 John (55, a Coal Jagger, born Wrexham) was with his Mary (47, born Gresford), at the Beast Market, Wrexham. They were with children Edmund (17), Esther (15), John and Thomas (both 12), Lydia (10), William (8) and Mathew (4). Elizabeth and George had already left home and married. In 1851, Another John and Mary Eddowes family were at Manchester, also a Maltster (they married at Wrexham in 1841).
Mary (John's wife) was recorded as a Farmers Widow in 1861, so John must have been a farmer earlier in his life.
Mrs Eddowes and Mr William Owen Eddowes held land and a tannery adjacent to the Beast Market (before 1896, sold in 1824), so may be a parents or close relatives.
In 1836 Esther, daughter of John and Mary, Farmer at Common Wood, was baptised. Common Wood in by Gresford and Holt, so it seems very likely Thomas of Pike Green, Gresford in 1851 is John's brother.
According to the births of the children, the family moved from Holt to Wrexham about 1839-40. Unfortunately, there are no Census records for Wrexham 1841 that have survived .
John's death was recorded at Wrexham in 1852. His wife Mary then moved to her daughter's Esther in Birkenhead where she died in 1868
1835 - 1917

Esther was born about 1835 and baptised 17 April 1836. She is my 2x great grandmother.
In 1851, Esther aged 15 born Holt, was with her parents John and Mary and siblings Edmund and John.
On 24 Oct 1853, Esther Eddowes married Richared Brereton at Brymbo, Wrexham. Esther was aged 18 and Richard 19.
Brearton was spelt "Braeton" in 1861 census. Esther and her son John were born at Common Wood, Wrexham (1871 census) by Gresfoird.
Living at 18 George St., Birkenhead in 1871 and 1881, with several boarders including George Eddowes living with them.
On 24 Oug 1878 Esther was in the news. She and her niece Martha Eddowes were summonsed for assault on Ann Baker, Martha's sister.
In 1891, Richard and Esther were at the Shropshire Inn, New Road.
Esther Brereton was listed in the 1906 Kelly's Directory: At 11 Willaston Pl, Birkenhead - Bird-in-Hand P.H., although it was actually 11 Chapel Street.
After Esther's husband, Richard dIed, Esther sold the pub (the Bird in Hand) and bought a house, 56 Church Street.
Esther died in 1917 and left a Will, leaving her house and most of her estate to her daughter Anne Hale (see reference for a transcript of the Will).
1838 - 1883
Thomas
Eddowes
45
45
Thomas and John were twins, born at Common Wood, sons of John and Mary Eddowes, farmer
In 1851, Thomas (12, born Holt) with parents and family were living at the Beast Market in Wrexham.
31 Dec 1860, Thomas, son of John and Mary Ann daughter of David were married at Liveprool, both of Full Age and parents labourers. They lived at Penybryn, Wrexham for a short while which is where their firstborn died.
In 1861, Thomas and Mary Ann (both 22) were visiting sister Esther Brereton at Chapel Street, Birkenhead.
In 1871, Thomas and Mary Ann Eddowes (32 & 29) were living in the underground kitchen, under 30 Chapel Street, Birkenhead. Thomas was a labourer, born at Common Wood, Denbighshire. This confirms he is the son of John Eddowes (also of Common Wood). There two surviving daughters Louisa and Elizabeth (4 & 6 mo) were with them.
In 1881, Thomas and Mary (42 & 38), Elizabeth (9), Mary J (5) and Minnie (3) were at 24 Chapel Street, Birkenhead.
In 1891, daughter Mary Jane was from Lower Stansty Farm, Wrexham.

In 1851, Matthew was 4, living at the Beast Market, Wrexham with parents John and Mary and 6 older siblings.
On 17 Jan 1857 Matthew was in the news. As a boy aged 10, had found a gold watch (it had been stolen by Jane Povey), and handed it to his mother Mary. They were living at Beast Market, Wrexham.
Living with mother Mary and Richard and Esther and family in 1861
In Dec 1867, Although never married, he and Mary Ann had a son Matthew Eddowes baptised.

Lydia was born in 1841, soon after the family had moved from Holt to Wrexham.
In 1851, Lydia was 10, living at the Beast Market, Wrexham with parents John and Mary and 6 siblings. She married Samuel Sherlock, a railway porter, in Liverpool in 1868 when aged 18. They lived in Birkenhead for several years before moving to Toxteth Park.

There was a Samuel in boarding school in Birkenhead in 1881, whilst his two brithers stayed with their parents in Kirkdale, Lancashire. However, two Samuel Sherlocks were born in Birkenhead in 1869/70, so this is likely to be the wrong one.

Richard

Richard and baby brother John (aged 1) were paupers, in a home in Fazakerley, Everton in 1891, after both parents died.
He was probably adopted, possibly with baby brother John , as no matching death record for a child in Lancashire in that decade.
In 1921, Richard and Lily were in Birkenhead with Robert, William Samuel, Mary Jane, Lydia and Donald.
1830 - 1893
George
Eddowes
63
63
NOTE: There is another Eddowes and Jones family from Wrexham (Thomas and Ann)
There's was no direct evidence that George was a son of John and Mary until a newspaper article in 1878 was found about a family dispute involving Esther Brereton (nee Eddowes) in Birkenhead. The 1841 Wrexham census records are missing, and by 1851 he was married. However his oldest son, George, was living with Esther in 1881.
In 1881, George a paver and Mary (53 & 51) were living at 9 Maderia Aoll, Wrexham with El;izabeth (28), Edwin (10), Arthur (9), Elizabeth (6) and George (2)
George must have liked a drink. "George Eddowes was charged by P.C. Jones, with being drunk and disorderly in High-Street (Wrexham) on the Tuesday night previously (to 28-Jan-1865), and was fined 5s and costs." Mary was also charged in 1893.
George (53) was a Staff Sergent Denbigh Welsh Fusiliers (R.W.F.) in 1871. He was pensioned off 16 Dec 1884
In May 1893, George Eddowes died. George Eddowes is buried in grave 3149 at Wrexham Cemetery, together with Elizabeth (1859-1935) and John (1858-1915)
In 1911, George's wife Mary (85. Wid) was living with her son Edward at the Beast Market, Wrexham.

Thomas Jones, aged 72, was lodging with George and Mary in 1871. Was this Mary's father?
18 Aug 1888 Mary alleged an assault by Edward Lewis. She accused him of knocking her to the ground and kicking her, but it may have been a drunken brawel. On 18-Feb-1892 Mary Eddowes was fined 2s and 6d for being drunk and disordely at the Beast Market, Wrexham.
In 1911, Mary (85. Wid) was living with her son Edward at the Beast Market, Wrexham.
1852 - 1925
Elizabeth

1852 Birth Cert for Elizabeth confirms the father as George Eddowes, labourer and the mother Mary Eddowes, formerly Jones.
In 1872, Arthur was baptised EDDOWES, abode Cattle Market (Wrexham), with no father named.
Elizabeth is married in 1881 (but still recorded as Eddowes) and has Arthur, Elizabeth and George. She is still living with her parents. The Elizabeth that married Thomas Henry Roberts in 1874 is another, the daughter of Ralph.
It appears Elizabeth never married. She died Sep 1925 aged 73, and is buried at Wrexham with her younger brother Edward in grave 5971 at Wrexham Cemetery.

Both parents died soon after John was born. It also seems John was not the son of Lydia, as no birth registered with EDDOWES as the mother.
Richard and baby brother John (aged 1) were paupers, in a home in Fazakerley, Everton in 1891, after both his parents died.
He was probably adopted, as no matching death record for a child in Lancashire in that decade.

Thomas and John were twins, born at Common Wood, sons of John and Mary Eddowes, farmer
Marriage recorded as John EDDOWS, so hard to find.
21 Jun 1859 John Eddows, labourer of Birkenhead (21,X) son of John a farmer married Phoebe Parry (19) of Peckforton at Bunbury. Witnesses were Elizabeth Dodd, Samuel Dutton, John Ledsham & William Spencer.
It appears from the 1871 census, his full name was George John Eddowes, but George was never used.
John had a cousin Samuel Dutton with him in 1861. Phoebe's mother was Martha Dutton, so presumably Samuel was really Phoebe's cousin.

Thomas and Ralph Eddowes (1782-1870) are unconfirmed brothers. Both are from Wrexham and their families moved to Barton-upon-Irwell.
Thomas was a Maltster in 1841 for John's marriage. It was Thomas Hall who was the Maltster at Beast Market in 1796.
Thomas probably had a brother Robert Eddows, and both had daughters Charlotte.

WARNING: This is another John and Mary Eddowes family, from Wrexham, also a Maltster when married at Brymbo, but about 10y younger: And another John Eddowes of the same age, born Wrexham, a Wheelwright in 1851 at Worsley, Lancashire.
In 1841, John and his father Thomas were Maltsters and on his marriage record and also a Maltster on the 1851 census (at Manchester).
In 1861, John and Mary were at 23 Chorlton Street, London Road, Manchester. He was now an Agricultural labourer.
John died in 1871. The death was registered at Chorlton which is where wife Mary was on the 1871 census.

69
Mary was a servant from Wrexham Regis when she married John. Her father was Robert Thomas, a Joiner.
The 1851 census shows Mary is from Montgomeryshire, and daughter Emma was also born there. They didnt get married in Wrexham until after Emma was born.
In 1881, Mary was living with her unmarried son John at 8 Indigo Street, Chorlton near Manchester.

In 1842, Elizabeth was born in Wrexham, and then moved to Manchester.
By 1851, Elizabeth was with her family in Manchester. They had just moved there the previous year (after Mary born).
In 1861, Elizabeth was a house servent (19), in Salford, aged 19, for John G and Mary Susannah Hales and family, a furniture broker (a Pawnbroker) from Gravesend, Kent. These could be related to the Hale family from Kent.
Elizabeth died in 1870
1843
Charlotte
Eddowes
Charlotte (18) married Robert Bingley (19, a Smith) at St, John's Manchester 10-Dec-1860. Her name was recorded as Edwards, not Eddowes.
Charlotte Bingley, 38 was married in 1871, a charwoman and living with her parents. There is no marriage record (except one for Charlotte Eliza Eddowes in Lamberth, London in 1865), so she probably had a son but never married!

Thomas was born 25 Feb 1802, but not baptised until 1805, the same day as his sister Hester.
1822, Thomas Eddowes married Martha Jones at Gresford. They had their family at Gresford before Martha died in 1843, aged 43.
29 Dec 1843, Thomas "Eadows" (widowed), son of John married Elizabeth Weaver (widowed), daughter of Richard Jones at St. Mary on the Hill, Chester, Cheshire.
In 1851, Thomas Eddowes and Elizabeth (50 & 65) were at Pike Green, Gresford farming 23 acres. They had Elizabeth (15), and sons Charles (12) and Henry (10). Presumably these three children are not Elizabeth's and she is too old. Also 10 lodgers including Edward Thomas (50, Wid, Wheelwright) and his two daughters.
John is a likely younger brother of Thomas and Hester, also children of (another) John and Elizabeth (a theory based mainly on John and Mary having a daughters Elizabeth and Esther and son John).
The family moved to Tranmere, Birkenhead probably after Thomas died, although there is (another) older Thomas Stanton Eddowes from Wrexham there in 1861, 1871 and 1881. That Thomas (an anchor and chain maker) was in Little Meolse in 1851.
