Family Subtree Diagram : Dittmer, Liverpool

My mother (Joan Dittmer) remembers this family as "Uncles" and "Aunts", although clearly they where not. However, as the only other Dittmer families in the area, and with matching DNA, they are certainly related. There are several other events tieing the families together. Information on this Henry Dittmer comes from his marriage to Ann. He married in Liverpool, so could be a possible father of my Peter Henry Dittmer. After the parents died, the family moved to Livepool and Illinois, USA. Ann Luter (or Suter) was a widdow when she married Henry. Doris and Margaret may have been sisters, as after Doris died, Chris Dittmer maried the younger Margaret. A Lutheran Dittmer family from Pattersen, Hannover Germany (but 80 miles SW of Diersbüttel). Births registered at Kirkdale Sculcoates, Hull connection ? Dittmer family with Albertina born in Hull No other BMD in Hull (also MMN = TATE in Sunderland) DNA match to CKD and myself in dwittag's linked Tree. No other WITTHOFT links. Connections to Bispingen and Barnstedt (6 miles West & East of Diersbüttel) UPDATE - Johanna (Anna) may no be sister of Gustav, but another family - TBC Dittmer family from Hanstedt, 16 miles NW & SE of Diersbüttel (appears twice on Google Maps) Another family Know each other: Probably brothers as both fathers are Henry/Heinrich (farmers).

Henry lived with Catherine Dorothee Sophie Dittmer after his wife died.  This was quite likely his spinster step-sister and closest living relative. Representative of: Made a declaration on 29 Oct 1926 to correct the birth details for Dorris.  Was this her relation? Lives with: Matthew and Lizzie Walker lived at 34 Bankburn-road Liverpool until 1949, when he died at The Eye and Ear Infirmary, Liverpool Funding of: Catherine D.S. Both Nat. Br. Subjects and Sugar Refiners from Hanover, so appear to be together. Lives with: After his paents died, Fred went to live with his uncle Herman Dittmer 1881 - 1917 Christopher (Fred) Frederick Dittmer 36 36 Born Christopher (or Christoph) Frederick, and known as Fred.

In 1891, Living at 45 Ascot Street, (Scotland ward), Liverpool (aged 3 months).

In 1901, Living at 63 Lambeth Road, Kirkdale. Son Will was baptised in Kirkdale in 1905.

Fred was living in Asser Road, West Derby in 1900's and was an Assistant Steward on the Verdi in 1917.  When visiting NY, he was recorded as British (Race and Nationality) from Liverpool and 5'4" tall and 140 lb in 1917.

In 1905, Fred married Maul Seymour Lindop.

In 1911 Fred was married, an assistant in a shop selling tea and butter and living at 1 Albany Road, Prescot.

8 Aug 1913, Fred's wife Maud died.  Fred was recorded as Frederick George Dittmer (i.e. not Crhistopher Frederick), a Grocer's Manager of 1 Albany Road, Prescot. However, when his son George Henry died in July, he was correctly named Frederick Dittmer.

In 1914-15, Frank Dittmer, 33, born Liverpool was a crew member, "Assistant Steward", on the Westmeath.  Later, aged 34 he was Assistant Steward on the Canada.

9 Aug 1917, Frederick (36) as recorded arriving at New York from Buenos Aires on the Verdi. 

In 1818, 1819, 1921, Christopher and (mother or wife?) Margaret "Dittmar" are listed on the Liverpool Electoral Registers at 42 Alton Road, together with (brother) Charles Dittmar.

Val Hawkyeard (RootsWeb) has her as Ann Marie Christine (b.1868).

Mary was still single, aged 35 and with her parents in 1911. 

Anna Marie died 14 May 1941 and is buried with her parents at Kirkdale. 1878 - 1938 George William Dittmer 59 59 Living at 45 Ascot Street, (Scotland ward), Liverpool in 1881 and 1891.

In 1911, George W and Alice M Dittmer were living in Lower Bebington, Wirral with Ethel Hewis or Lewis (b.1894) and Frederick Charles Underwood (b.1891)

Mum’s family and Lizzie and Mat where “quite close”.  Mum used to go them every Christmas when they were young.  They would make a fuss of Mum and Harry (Cliff was not there or was just very quiet?) as they had no children of their own.  Liz would make trifles laced with rum and with 6d coins hidden in them.  Although mum didn’t like the rum, she would eat it to get the 6d.
Lizzie has a husky voice and grey-white hair.  Mat used to chew egg shells to help his rheumatism.  They lived in an old terraced house in Liverpool in the 1920's.

In 1911, Elizabeth (28) was still single, so married quie late in life (about 46).

In 1921, Elizabeth (39) was living with her brother Herman Dittmer.
 1884 - 1919 Wilhelm (William) Heinrich Dittmer 34 34 In 1901, Wilhelm married Margaret Ann Houghton at St Thomas Eccleston, St Helens.    

There is a birth record and he's on the 1891 census (aged 6), but cant find any Wil* Ditt* anywhere in UK.  However, there was William Augistin Dittmer (1881-1950), son of John, who died at 3 Stanley Street, Liverpool,  aged 69 and buried at Everton.

In 1914, Henry Dittmer, aged 28 born Liverpool, address 157 Stanley Road, was a passage worker on the Steam Ship Essex, sailing from Liverpool.  This was his first ship.

TonyB has discovered that Henry emigrated to Australia between 1901 and 1915.  He married Agnes Boyd in 1915 and they adopted one child, a girl. 1888 - 1964 Hermann (Chris) Hinrich Christopher Dittmer 75 75 Hermann Hinrich Christopher, probably should be Hermann Heinrich (or Henrich) Christopher Dittmer (same as his brothers)

In 1907, Chris Dittmer applied at Birkenhead for a British  Seaman's ID card, so was probably working as a ship's carpenter at sea.

In 1911, living at 93 Stanley Road, aged 22, a carpenter for the White Star Line (so probably a ship builder or merchant seaman).

Val Hawkyeard (RootsWeb) has him as Herman Henry Christopher (b.1889), who was her grandfather.

In 1921, Herman Henry Christopher (b.1888), wife Elizabeth (b.1892), sisters Mary (b.1875) and Elizabeth (b.1882), brother Charles (b.1896), mother Margaret (b.1853) and son  Harold (b.1921), are on the census at West Derby, Liverpool. 

In 1939, Herman H C Dittmer was doing heavy work as a Shipwright in Liverpool.

In 1951, when Harold died (ie killed), his effects were left to Christopher Dittmer shipwright.  This presumably was his father.  Hermann's wife also records him as a shipwright in her 1961 probate record.  Elizabeth Ann Walker (sister) also left her estate to him (£1656 in 1952).

 1896 - 1970 Charles August Dittmer 74 74 Living at 63 Lambeth Road, Birkdale in 1901 with both parents and older brothers and sisters.

In 1911, Charles was living in West Derby, aged 14.

In 1918, Charles Dittmer ID No.371292 was recorded as a British Merchant Seaman (CR10 Card)

In 1921, Charles (24) was a shipwright for Harland and Wolff, living with brother Herman Henry Dittmer.

In 1939, Catherine D.S. Dittmer was living with Charles at 42 Athol Road (before she died in 1942).  Charles was a "Shipwright (heavy worker)"

Charles's older sisters Anna Marie Christina, who died in 1941 and Catherine Dorothee Sophie who died in 1942 left Charles August Dittmer £610 and £212 respectively. Both probate records show that Charles was a shipwright.

Charles travelled on the Portland Star from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada in Jan 1855, via Curaco back to London. His address at the time was 27 Balmont Drive, L6.

Information from Val Hawkyeard (RootsWeb). 1924 - 2003 Dora Margaret Dittmer 79 79 My mum remembers that Dora spoke with a very posh accent, dressed smart and had dark hair.  After she married Jack, they lived in a bungalow in Blundel Sands, Lancashire.  They had no children of her own.

My mum's family and Dora kept in contact at Christmas.  Dora came to most of the funerals from mum's (Joan Mather's) side of the family.

Dora and Jack moved into sheltered housing at Saxon House, Saxon Road,  Southport before she died. 1927 - 2006 (Marie) Elsie Dittmer 78 78 Joan and Elsie were twins.

Lived at 21 Vineside Road, West Derby, Liverpool

There was an Elsie Rowlands of 30 Central Road, Port Sunlight who may have been her daughter. 1927 - 1996 (Elizabeth) Joan Dittmer 68 68 Joan and Elsie were twins, living in Liverpool.
One (or both) lived in a flat.

My mum remembers that Joan had an ill daughter (whom Mum never met).  Mum exchanged Christmas cards with Joan and had a letter form her about 2001 letting her know her daughter had died.

In Q3 1949, Joan E Dittmer married Robert Reece at Liverpool North. 1910 - 1997 John (Jack) Ernest Latimer 87 87 Johns father was Andrew and mother Janet.  Andrew was much older than Janet.  He was a Chief Steward for the White Star Line, born in Lancaster.  Janet was from Liverpool.

John's mother Janet (a 47 year old Housewife) took John (aged 14) and his sister Janet Hamilton Latimer (aged 12) to Montreal,  Canada in 1924.  At the time they were living at 32 Thorndale Rd, Waterloo, Liverpool.  They sailed on the Megantic (White Star Line), a smaller sister ship to the Titanic, lainched 3 years earlier.

Had an open sports car.

In 1939, John was single, an Insurance Inspector living with his widowed mother Janet at 4 Marine Terrace, Crosby.

Later after he was married, John (known as Jack) lived in a bungalow at Blundel Sands. 1879 - 1949 Matthew (Mat) Walker 70 70 My mother (Joan Mather) remembers Mat.  He used to dress up as Father Christmas for the family.  His wife "Lizzie" would put 6d coins in the Christmas Trifle for the children to find.

He had bad rhumatism 1920's when my mother knew him. 1933 - 2024 Pamela (Betty) Elizabeth Dittmer 91 91 Betty Dittmer, an old friend of my mothers, is my 3rd cousin.  Betty was good friends with Elsie and Harry Dittmer of Devonshire Road (my grandparents).

Was known as Betty in her youth.  Mary Newman was her mother, who came from County Meath in 1914 to go into service in a 'big house' in Liverpool  They lived in Knotty Ash most of her life.

Family emigrated to NZ in 1966, possibly first living in Victoria, Australia 1927 - 1988 Frederick (Fred) Joseph Dittmer 60 60 Live in Queens Drive, Tuebrrook, Liverpool in early/mid 1900's.

Living at 19 Pilch Lane, Knotty Ash, Liverpool in late 1900s D. ~2003 Joan Rainford Living at 19 Pilch Lane, Knotty Ash, Liverpool in late 1900s. ~1955 - ~2001 Anne Dittmer 46 46 1877 - 1940 Alice Mary Williams 63 63 Alice Mary Williams was the only daughter of a family of 7 (and six brothers).  One of her brothers, Frederick Williams, was killed on 7 July 1916 in the 13th Battalion Cheshire Regiments battle at La Boiselle.  Unmitigated disaster 243 other ranks killed, 8 officers dead, Fredericks body was never found and he is remembered at Thiepval.

George and Alice were married in St. Mark, New Ferry.  They lived in their own house at 9 Boundary Road, Port Sunlight.  Alice was a “perfect lady”.

Alice had a Blue Valse from Germany which survived the bombing of their house in Port Sunlight.  It was passed through the Dittmer family, and I now have this valse. 1868 - 1942 Catherine (Doris or Dora) Dorothea Sophie Dittmer 73 73 "Doris" Living at 44 Epsom St., Liverpool in 1871 and then named Dorothy, living at 45 Ascot Street, (Scotland ward), Liverpool in 1881, but left by 1891.

She is recorded as Dora Dittmer in 1891, 23, in domestic service.  She is recorded as sister-in-law (as is the other servants), but this seems to be an error.

She is recorded as Dora??? S in 1901, 33 working as a servant (domestic waitress).

Dorothea died a spinster. 1883 - 1913 Maud Seymour Lindop 30 30 Maud's parents were Enoch William Lindop (1859-1906) and Elizabeth Lindop (nee Seymore), born 1860.  They married at Edge Hill, Liverpool in 1880.

In 1905, Maud married Fred Dittmer at Liverpool.

8 Aug 1913, Maud Seymour Dittmer of 1 Albany Road, Prescot died, aged 30.  She was recorded as the wife of Frederick George Dittmer, a Grocer's Manager.

 1847 July Dittmer Was Boarder with Christopher Dittmer in 1871, so probably brother or close relation.

Didn't appear on any other census or BMD search. D. 1929 Heinrich Heuer 1911 - 1913 George Henry Dittmer 2 2 Lived at 1 Albany Road, Prescot, and died aged 2. 1923 - 1987 Robert (Bob) Reece 63 63 Living at 12 Eaton Road, West Derby, Liverpool in late 1900's and with Joan's parents in 1955. George Parry 1867 - 1950 Johann (Henry) Peter Heinrich Dittmer 82 82 Henry is possibly adopted, and the son of Johann Heinrich's first son George Heinrich Christoph who died young in 1871, aghed 32.  This would also explain his sister Dorothee.

17 Aug 1867, Johann Peter Heinrich Dittmer (or Henry), the son of Henry a farmer was born in Diersbüttel, Rehlingen, Germany and went to school at Rehlingen (a 40 minute walk).

In 1874, when Johann Heinrich Christoph Dittmer married Magdalena Heuer, Johan’s father was also Johann Heinrich, farmer (deceased), so Chris and Henry are very likely to be brothers.

In 1886, Henry arrived in the UK from Germany, probably travelling from Hanover to Hull.  There is a Heinrich Dittmer arrived at Hull 12 Aug 1854 on the Britannia from Hamburg, but this Heinrich was a ship's cook.  Another Heinrich arrived at Hull from Hamburg in 1887, but this Heinrich appears to have continued his journey to the USA.

Christian Westpfahl and Sophia Duncacke had come to Liverpool about 1882 but only married in Liverpool March 1888.  The 1883 birth records for daughter Bertha shows he had already married Sophia, presumably in Germany before he came to England.  Friederike Westphal who Henry was to marry in 1892 was his landlord’s daughter, but she wasn’t in England in 1891 at the time of the census.

In 1891, Henry Dittmer (23 and single) and Peter Gellerson (47) from Hanover were lodging at 89 Opic Street, North Everton, Liverpool.  The head of house was Christian Westpfahl and his wife Sophia (46 & 39) and daughters Betha (8) and Merri (5).  Both men were labourers at the sugar refinery; hard, hot and sometimes dangerous work!

28 Feb 1892, Henry Dittmer (24), son of Henry a farmer, married Friedericke Westphal (22), daughter of Christian Westphal a sugar refiner at All Saints, Liverpool.  Both were living a 2 Great Nelson Street.  Their marriage witnesses were Charles and Bertha Heinz. 

Ather they married Henry and Freda lived at Opic Street, North Everton, Liverpool.

In 1893, the family were living at 104 Opic Street, North Everton when Harry was born. 

In 1894, Henry was listed in Kelly's directory as a "Sugar Boiler", living at 104 Opic Street, South Side.

In 1897, the family were living at 104 Opic Street when son Harry started school at St Peter's COE School, Sackville Street, Everton, aged 4.

About 1901 Henry returned to Germany for 2 weeks to visit his sister (her name not disclosed) in Diersbuttel, Germany (which is also where Henry went to public school).

In 1901, Henry and Friederike (33 & 31) were living at 4 Brunswick Road, Drypool, Hull, Yorkshire with their son Harry (aged 8).  Henry was a labourer at the Oil Mill (probably the historic Isis Oil Mill and Silo at Morley Street next to the River Hull).

In 1911, Henry and Frederika (aged 42 & 41 and both German subjects) and were living with their son Harry (18) at 56 Mossman Street, Windhill, Shipley, Yorkshire.  They had been married 19 years and only had the one child.  Henry was a labourer on a Sewage Farm for the municipal corporation.

Around 1914 to 1918, during WW1, Henry was interned on the Isle-of-Man.

In 1921, Henry and Fredericka were at Idle, North Bierley, West Yorkshire.

In April 1927, after the war and living in the UK for 41 years, Henry applied to be a UK citizen.

In Sep 1939, Henry (DOB 17 Aug 1865), a retired Grease Boiler, and Friederike D (DOB 15 Feb 1870) were living at No.6 Doctor Lane, Idle.  This was a small stone terraced house with a shared WC at the end of the terrace. Freda died 20 Oct (just after the register was taken).

In 1939, after Freda’s death, my mother recalls that Henry and son Harry came to live in Devonshire Road, Upton for a while.  However, there wasn’t much space for him there so he went to live in lodgings at Glebe Park Rd (near Arrowe Park) for a while

About 1942 Henry moved to 34 Bankburn-Road, Tuebrook where he lived with some Dittmer relatives, possibly two old aunts.  My own DNA confirms we are related to the Liverpool Dittmer family.

30 July 1950 Peter Henry Dittmer (otherwise Henry) of 34 Bankburn-Road, Tuebrook, Liverpool 13 died at 42 Belmont Road, Liverpool 6.  He left his estate of £231 to his son "Harry Dittmer (the elder) engineer".

 1853 - 1927 Katharina (Margaret) Margretha Magdalena Heuer 74 74 Aka. Cathaine Maria Margaret Dittmer.

Living at 45 Ascot Street, (Scotland ward), Liverpool in 1881 and 1891.

Was 21 when she married Chris Dittmer.  Her father was George, a labourer.

In 1901, living at 63 Lambeth Road, Kirkdale.

Katharine (Margaret) died on the 7th March 1927. 

In 1818, 1819, 1921, Christopher (her son) and Margaret "Dittmar" are listed on the Liverpool Electoral Registers at 42 Alton Road, together with (youngest son) Charles Dittmar. However, Christopher died at sea in 1917

A Hannover brth of Catharine Dorothea Elisabeth Dittmer (Lutheran) of 26 Oct 1867 has the father as Johann Heinrich Christoph Dittmer and mother Anna Dorothea Dittmer, so this is another possible daughter if Anna Dorothea is the same person.

The birth certificate for her daughter Dorris shows the mothers name as Magdalena Dorothea Elizabeth Heuer, so when she died, it appears that J H Dittmer may have married her sister.

Dorothea Dittmer is buried at Anfield with her infant son George Frederick and also Margaret Elizabeth Dittmer from Johann's second marriage, but each in different graves (grave 1261, 1176 and 145). 1845 - 1912 Johann (Chris) Heinrich Christoph Dittmer 67 67 "Johann Heinrich Christoph Dittmer" aka "John Henry Christopher Dittmer" (or simply Chris) was living at 44 Epsom St., Liverpool in 1871.  He had July Dittmar and Johann and Lewis Meyer bording with them, also from Hannover.

In 1901, Christopher was living at 63 Lambeth Road, Kirkdale.  He appears in the 1894 Kelly's directory as a sugar worker at the same address.

In 1911, living at 93 Stanley Road, West Derby in 1911, aged 66.

13 Aug 1912, "John Henry C Dittmer" aged 67 of 93 Stanley Road was buried at Kirkdale Cemetery (NC, Private Grave Section 5,76).  His wife Catharine of 42 Alton Road, Tuebrook joined him in 1927

NOTE: John Henry Dittmer (another?) arrived in England Apr-1872 on the British Queen from New Messow.  He was travelling with two other Dittmers including Heinrich Dittmer.  This John Henry died Q4-1902 in West Derby, Liverpool, aged 51 (so born 1851).

In 1917, Frederick Dittmer arrived at Ellis Island from Liverpool.

22 Aug 1919, William Dittmer (DOB 27 Jun 1905) was discharged from Lister Drive Council School, Tuebrook (reason given as now over school age).

About 1920, Fred started work as soon as he could, aged about 14 or 15.

In 1921, Frederick William Dittmer (15y, 11mo) was living with Herman Henry Christopher and Elizabeth Dittmer and others.

In 1926, after his parent had died, Frederick William Dittmer (and his uncle Charles) were still living at 42 Alton Road.

Will (but mum doesn’t remember May coming) would occasionally visit their house in Devonshire Road.  He was a nice chap.  Very genuine.  He would bring them wooden blocks to burn on the fire.  These may have come from his job (on the railways maybe?) 1897 - 1990 Mary (May) Elizabeth Newman 93 93 Tony Beard's grandmother was Mary Newman from County Meath, Ireland.  The family had the same piece of land for 400 odd years,  Mary came to the UK in 1914.

My mother reemembers the parents of Fred and Betty as Will and May (most definately she says).  This is confirmed by her grandson, Tony.

May was very loud and Irish, Catholic and rather fat.
She would always make you welcome, going into the back to boil eggs to make sandwiches and used a fine bone china tea service.  She made very nice pastry pies.

May was very upset when her daughter Betty moved away.  May thought she would never see her daughter again!

Harold Dittmer died 22 April 1952, aged 30, and was buried with his uncle and aunt Matthew and Elizabeth Walker at Kirkdale Cemetery. 1881 Reginald Mitchell Banks Reginald Mitchell Banks and Maurice Davidson made a declaration on 29 Oct 1926 to correct the birth details for Dorris.  See scanned image.

Reginald was the son of Sir William Mitchell Banks, and was an undergraduate as Oxon in 1901, and was the lawyer making the declaration of change of Doris's birth certificate in 1926. Claus wasted no time. After Hibbel died in Aug 1841, Claus partnered with Anna, who was already about 2 months pregnant when they married in April 1842.  However, their first child didnt survive (died 5 Nov 1842).. 1808 - 1841 Hibbel Gerken 33 33 Hibbel's father was Cord Gerken D. 1859 Ernest Emile Becker Ernest Emil is the only recorded death in Liverpool, so this may the Becker that Ann was married to. 1829 Anna Dittmer After her parents died, Anna (and brother Heinrich) came to Liverpool, where they both married. In 1854 Hermann ws living at 27 Kent St, Liverpool when he married Dothea. ~1830 Dothea Haeseler Dothea Haesler's father was David Haseler, a Chemist. 1884 Maurice Davidson Maurice was a Medical Practitioner (MD), living in London in 1911, but this is probably the preson correcting the birth certificate of Doris in 1926. 1871 - 1939 Annie Boyd 68 68 1881 - 1933 Margaret (Maggie) Ann Houghton 52 52 In 1901, Wilhelm married Margaret Ann Houghton, daughter of John and Annie Houghton at St Thomas Eccleston, St Helens.

6 June 1902, Margaret Ann Dittmer was listed (admitted) on the Liverpool Workhouse (entry no 5883), possibly due to the death of her second child. 1856 Herman Dittmer Herman (24, Clerk) from Germany was boarding at 30 Percy Street in Liverpool in 1881, with several other Germans including Herman Meyer.

There is no evidence Herman is related to any of the other Liverpool Dittmers, other than they are all related and from Hannover State.

Herman, is the likely son of Hermann Dittmer (a tailor) and Dorthea Haseler who married in Liverpool in 1852. He may be part of the larger Dittmer family that came to Liverpool from Germany in the 1800s. <1817 - >1874 George Heuer 57 57 <unknown> ~1850 - <1926 Johann (Fred) Heinrich Frederich Dittmer 76 76 An ASSUMPTION - Johann Heinrich Frederich Dittmer was a witness at Chris's second mariage of 1874.  The father was already deceased, so this is possibly an older (or oldest) brother.

Dorothee is confirmed as only surviving sibling of Henry (excluding any living in the UK) in 1926.  She is described as "Dorothee Ahrens H D, Widow, of Hagen, near Lüneburg, Hanover. Anna may be Anne Dorothee E Dittmer, born 24 Jun 1857 in Barnstede (see Thorsten Meyer’s tree) so Anne may be the Dorothee his sister.

13 Oct 1873 Johann Dittmer (16), sailing from Liverpool on the "City of Paris", arrived in New York. She was the daughter of Lorenz and Dorothea Dittmer (46 & 45) and was with 5 other siblings, so this may be a different person.  They also lived in Illinois and are buried at Pleasant Valley, Jo Daviess County.

By 1880, Anna's brother Gustave (27), a boot and shoe  dealer was married to Jennie (20 from Vermont), was still living at Augusta, Eau Claire with his father Ferderick (63) a shoemaker.
