In 1891, Richard and Esther were at the Shropshire Inn, New Road.

Richard was a publican and had the "Bird in Hand" at 7 Chapel Street, Birkenhead.  It was a busy pub, opening at 6am so the night shift could have a drink after finishing work.

George’s daughter Mary (25) (i.e. Robert’s sister) was also living with them. Representative of: In 1868, Charles was witness to Jane's marriage. 1835 - 1894 Richard Brereton 59 59 Dont confuse with the other Richard Brereton, son of George and Sarah born the same year at Tilston.  This Richard emigrated to Utah, USA in about 1860. 1836 - 1870 William Brereton 33 33 One Willian Brereton emigrated to Australia with George and Thomas (sons of Thomas and Martha Brereton), but doesnt appear to be this William.

According to Kelly's 1910 directory, William Brereton was a Station Master at Rock Ferry Station, but this is another William Brereton (1871-1946), a distant relative.
1837 - 1899 Robert Brereton 61 61 1838, Robert was born at Horton, son of George and Jane Brereton a Farmer.

In 1841, Robert was 3, with parents George and Jane (both 30) and three older siblings at Horton

In 1861, a year after he married Jane, he is in lodgings, a brick layer. single in Liverpool.

In 1871, Robert, a labourer, and Jane (32 & 31) are at 95 Back Price Street, Birkenhead.  They have Jane (10), Ann (7), Mary (5) and Robert H (2).

Robert's wife Jane died in 1878 and he remarried Mary Bragger the following year.

In 1881, Robert (43) is still in Birkenhead, now a Dock Labourer, with wife Margaret (43).  He has a son William B Brereton (14) who could be a step-son.  Also present are R Brereton (13), Margaret (6) and Lizzie (11 months)
1843 - 1893 John Brereton 49 49 Emigrated to Australia with his uncle Thomas and Thomas's wife, Martha, but must have returned and married Phoebe. 1848 - 1883 Jane Brereton 34 34 In 1848 Jane was born at Horton or Cuddington, Cheshire

Mary was a Widower by 1871.  In 1881 she was head of a large household of 16, as a Housekeeper perhaps head servant.

In 1901 Mary was with her two grandchildren, William and Lizzie Brereton.

Martha's father was Benjamin Holt, a Gardener in 1869.

Samuel and Martha ran a lodging house in Liscard. Catherine Holt (servant) was living with them in 1861.
1810 - 1867 Jane Hopley 57 57 Jane is one of my 8 Great Great Great (4X) Grandmothers.

In 1831 when George and Jane were married, thier parents were witness to the marriage. George was of Harthill Parish, and Jane from Shocklach.

Jane inhereted a large sum of money and a farmhouse from her uncle Richard Richards in 1858.  Richard also had the Fish Inn, Shocklach before he retired, and possibly Jane and George took it over in the 1850s.

Jane Hopley and George had a nephew Edward Brereton, who married Frances Hopley from Broxton.
1838 William Gregory From the marriage record, William's father was Charles Gregory.

1 Oct 1868, William was 30 and of no occupation when he married Jane Hopley, aged 21 at Birkenhead.

In 1869, after they married, the family moved to Whitchurch where sons William Hopley Gregory and Charles were born.

About 1876 the family moved to Nantwich where their two daughters were born in 1878 and 1881.

In 1881, some disaster hit the family.  William went to live with his uncle, and Jane and the three younger children went to the workhouse.  Son Charles was born in Whitchurch, so he was sent to the Whitchurch Workhouse.  The girls were born in Nantwich so went to the Nantwich Workhouse with their mother Jane.
1869 William Hopley Gregory William Hopley Gregory, named after his grandmother Jane Hopley, was born in Whitchurch in 1874.

In 1881, W'm Gregory (12, Nephew, born Whitchurch was living with his Aunt and Uncle Thomas and Sarah Sumner.)

In 1894, W Gregory, born 1869, arrived in Philadelphia from Liverpool.
1842 - 1843 Mary Brereton 4m 4m 1841 - 1920 Pheobe Probin 79 79 Pheobe (widow, aged 60) was a charwoman in 1901.

Living at 105 Park St, Birkenhead (alone) in 1911 on her old aged pension.

Another Phoebe Probyn died Jan 1885, aged 83, so possibly her mother.
1868 - 1868 Jane Brereton 1m 1m Jane was named after her grandmother Jane Brereton (nee Hopley), who had just died the previous year, but Jane also died. 1869 - 1874 Mary Elizabeth Brereton 4 4 Only one of the three children survived to 1911.  Mary Elizabeth died aged 4. 1866 Phoebe Brereton 1872 - 1908 John Morris 36 36 1897 Gladys Emmaline Morris Gladys did NOT marry Alfred Bland (That was a Gladys Elizabeth Morris, born 1890) 1899 Eva Morris 1810 - 1893 George Brereton 83 83 George is one of my 8 Great Great Great (4X) Grandfathers.  George was born at Burwardsley (Farm), about one mile from Harthill.

When George and Jane were married, thier parents were witness to the marriage. George was of Harthill Parish, and Jane from Shocklach.

In 1848, when daughter Jane was born, George was at Horton.

In 1850 George, Jane Brereton and family are living at Cuddington Mill, where son Thomas was born.

In 1851, George (41, a Miller and Farmer of 48 acres) and Jane (41) are at Wrexham with the family; Richard (16), William (14), Robert (12), John (7), Jane (3) and Thomas (0).

In 1853, when George's son Richard married Esther Eddowes, George was a Publican.

In 1861, George and Jane (52 & 53) were farmers of 20 acres and employed one man.

About 1865, the family moved to Birkenhead, working as a Porter.  His wife Jane died in Birkenhead in 1867 and in 1869 George re-married Martha Holt (widow, aged 48). He was 59 but put down 55 on his marriage record

In 1871, George, a porter, and Martha (56 & 48) were living at 8 Neptune Street, Birkenhead.  Two of Marthas children (George's step-children) were with them.

In 1891, George was living with son Robert Brereton in Birkenhead.

After Jane died, George married Martha Holt, 12 years his junior.  They were in Birkenhead in 1881.

Dont confuse with other George Breretons born about 1809 and 1815 who married Martha Hildich in 1859.  Also his uncle Thomas had a son George, born 1811 (i.e. cousin).

Ann recorded George as born in 1806, so it is possible we have the wrong George, but unlikely as good links with son and family.

Unlike older brothers John and Thomas, William and George did not make a Will.
1838 - 1891 James Brereton 52 52 Is James related to our Breretons.  Well he's in Brikenhead in 1881, and in the pub/hotel trade !
