There is another William Mather (silk weaver) and Sarah of Atherton The Marriage of Sarah Bayley to William is the only marriage to a Mather. Sarah already has a daughter Ann, and Williams son James didn't survive, with William dying 6 months later, aged 22. How did Sarah survive with possibly 4 children after William died in 1833? She was living at Waterloo in 1841, near the other Mather family, so perhaps they are related. Sarah Mather (35, weaver) with Ann (10), John (1) at WATERLOO, Little Bolton in 1841. Also present Isaac Deakin (30) and Betty Bayley (18wks). She was living a few doors away from our Samuel Mather (1791-1854) In 1851 we learn that James (36) is a coal miner from Ireland. Hannah (13) was born in Darcey Lever, Ann (24) from Darwen, and John (10) from L.B. Margaret Mather was a spinster of Darcey Lever when she had Alice and Mary baptised. James Brooks (a COLLIER) married Margaret Mather, Middleton 18 Sep 1836, and had a daughter Hannah (b.1838). In 1841 James and Margaret were in Darcey Lever and had Alice Mather (10) and Mary Mather (8) with them. In 1844 James (Widower) from Darcey Lever married Sarah Mather (widow) from L.B. She was 25 in 1851, so probably born before 1829. Ann therefore cant be a child of William Mather.

Recorded as Ann Wather (and corrected as Ann Mather) on the 1851 census, "Wifes Daughter" (i.e. stepdaughter).

William would have been too young to be Ann's father.  Also, her mother Sarah was much older than William, so it is likely she had married before.

Ann Mather (1827-1893) was buried with George and Ellen Pendlebury at Halliwell. Is this her? 1840 John Mather The John Mather who married Frances in 1866 had a brother Will 2 years older (born Bury ~1842) with him in 1871.  This must be another John Mather about 5 years younger, and also  there is no Will Mather on the 1861 census, and Sarah was single in 1841 (and remarried in 1844).

If John was Sarah's daughter, then William cant be the father, because he died before Alice in Sep 1838.

John (20) is boarding with step-parents James (46) and Sarah (66) in 1861.

Hannah and James were still in Darcy Lever in 1861, maried with son John Denton (b.1860). 1841 Betty Bayley Betty (18wks) was staying with Sarah in 1841, and was possibly an illegitimate child, as Sarah was the only female who could have been her mother.  It is unlikely a mother would leave her 18 week old child!

Betty Bailey's birth was not registered (in Bolton).  She is possibly the daughter of Bridget Dixon and William Bayley who married in 1832 and Bridget Bailey died in 1841, aged 30 1813 - 1888 Mary Haslam 75 75 Mary is the oldest, and only female of six children present (in 1851) 1817 - 1853 Thomas Benyon 36 36 May not be Samuel - not confirmed. 1843 Ann Benyon 1844 William Benyon 1847 Robert Benyon 1848 Alice Benyon ~1851 - 1877 William Turner 26 26 1876 Mary Elizabeth Turner Thomas Whitelaw 1866 Alfred Barnes Whitelaw 1869 Mary Barns Whitelaw 1864 Martha A Whitelaw 1837 Peter Benyon 1839 Charlotte Benyon 1850 Elizabeth Benyon 1840 John Benyon 1785 Charlotte Haslam 1785 Mathew Haslam 1841 Alice Eckersley 1837 - 1838 Alice Mather 1 1 Mother Sarah was a widow when Alice died 5-Sep-1838, aged 16 months.  Sarah (and daughter Alice) were living at Cotton St, Halliwell at the time of Alice's death in Sep 1838.

Sarah Mather is on the 1841 census at Waterloo.  Just a few doors away are Samuel and Alice Mather and family (next page of census).

Its not clear who the father was, but may have been William Mather who died in 1837

Alice was possibly named after her grandmother. 1832 - 1833 James Mather 6m 6m 1814 - 1882 James Brooks 68 68 James was a Coal Miner, born in Ireland.  His father was George Brooks, a coal dealer (in 1844) and later (in 1864) a weaver.

In 1841 he was with Margaret (aged 30) as daughter Hannah Brooks (aged 2).  In the same household was Alice and Mary Mather (aged 10 and 8).

In 1842, Margaret died and James married Sarah Mather (widow), of Little Bolton, daughter of John Bailey.

After James married Mary Haslam, he had 4 of her children with him in 1861.  There were none of his! 1830 Alice Mather Alice was baptised "Alice Daughter of Margaret Mather, Darcey Lever, Spinster".

Alice and Mary were on the 1841 census living with James and Margaret Brooks and family.  These are the daughters of Margaret Mather when she was a spinster.  Thee are no records of the girls getting married (1841-51) and recording James Brooks as their father, so what happened to them?

In 1851 Alice was a servant at Farnworth (aged 20, born Darcy Lever).

31 Dec 1854, Alice may be the "Alice Brooks", daughter of James Brooks who married Thomas Helme.  Alice Helme, (possibly wife of Moses so another) born Little Lever, died in 1901, aged 70
 1833 Mary Mather Mary was baptised "Mary Daughter of Margaret Mather, Darcey Lever, Spinster".  She was illegitimate with father unknown when she married.

Alice and Mary Mather were on the 1841 census living with James and Margaret Brooks and family.  These are the daughters of Margaret Mather when she was a spinster. 

In 1851, Alice wasnt at home and was probably in service like her sister, possibly working in Manchester.

23 Sep 1855, Mary Mather of Darcy Lever, Illegitimate, married John Jenkinson of Little Lever, an Engineer.

In 1861, John and Mary (both 28) were at Little Lever with sons Daniel (5), James (2) and William (1).

In 1871, John and Mary (both 38) with sons Daniel (15), James (12) and William (11) and Joseph (9).

In 1881, John and Mary (both 48) were in Sheffield with sons Joseph (18) and Roland (6).
 1812 - 1842 Margaret Mather 30 30 1830-33, Margaret Mather was a spinster of Darcey Lever when she had Alice and Mary baptised.

In 1836, Margaret married James Brooks, a coal miner of Darcy Lever.

Margaret died, aged 30, soon after the 1841 birth of Samuel. 1804 - 1864 Sarah Bayley 60 60 In 1841, Sarah Mather (35, Weaver) was living with Thomas and Mary Grundy (both 50) at Waterloo, Little Bolton with Ann (10) and John (1), about 4 doors away from Samuel and Alice Mather, but are they related?

In 1829, Sarah Mather married James Grundy, and possibly already had his daughter Ann Mather before they marrried,  Then James may have died and Sarah lived with his family, keeping her Mather name.

Sarah was born in Ringley, about 3 miles SE of Bolton according to the 1851 census.

Sarah and William Mather were both single when they married.  Acording to Sarah's second marriage in 1844, she was Widowed, and her father was John Bailey.  George Brooks's father was James Brooks.

Sarah had Ann (b.1833) and John Mather (b.1840).  She was aged ~35, living at Waterloo in 1841.  Betty Bayley (18 wks) her niece was present.  The Mathers were living with Thomas and Mary Grundy (and William and Betty Grundy).

She probably had a sister-in-law Fanny Bayley, also from Ringley. John Bayley <unknown> <unknown> ~1807 James Grundy James Grundy married Sarah Mather at Bolton 9-Feb-1829  1833 - 1847 George Mather 14 14 George son of William died in 1847 (possibly step-son of George and Margaret Reede (with them at Ogden Street, Ardwick, Manchester in 1841).

George Mather (a Mechanic) and Margaret Reed (nee Roscoe), married 1822 and both 35 in 1841 had no other children.

George may be the Son of George and Sarah.  Born about the time his father died, so fostered or adopted by the Reede family. 1811 - 1833 William Mather 22 22 In 1832, William married Sarah Bayley.  His witness was Henry Isherwood (who may have married his sister Mary Mather 30-Jan-1831 at Kearsley and lived at Hacking Lane in 1841).

After Sarah's husband William Mather died (in 1837), Sarah was a neighbour of Samuel and Alice Mather in 1841, living a few doors away at Waterloo Rd, Little Bolton.  Its tempting to think that William is the son of Samuel and Alice but if they baptised him 21 July 1811 then that is too soon after Isaac's birth of 13 Oct 1810.

Sarah's husband must have died after 1837, as they had a child Alice (who died 1838), and John in 1839.

According to baptism of James, William was a Spinner from Shaprles. 1841 - 1842 Samuel Brooks 1m 1m 1853 Joseph Benyon ~1810 John Bayley 4 June 1830, John Bayley married Betty Mather.  His witness was Lawrence Wroe.  Two years later, Lawrence Roe married Maria Knowles.  Lawrence who was Irish and Maria (both born about 1810) lived in Pilkington in 1841 when Lawrence and Maria were neighbours of John and Mary Mather nee Johnson  (20 & 30), so perhaps Betty had a brother John. 

In 1841, John a bobbin maker and Elizabeth Bailey (both 35) were at Mitton, Blackburn in the district of Aighton, Bailey and Chaigley (North of Preston) with Alice (10), Richard (10), James (8), Thomas (5), and John (3).  There were still there in 1851, John a master bobbin maker and employer of 5 men, with all their birth recorded as Bailey, so this is another family.  John married Elizabeth Bradley at Mitton in 1830 and the birth of their son John, registered at Chipping in 1830 shows the MMN as Bradley. 1830 Alice Bayley NOTE: NOT the Alice Bailey of Mitton, North of Preston. 1822 John Mather John (20) and Mary (30), were at Plikington in 1841 with Sarah Ann Mather (2) and Ann Johnson (30).

There is a 10y age difference, so perhaps John and Mary are not married, but broher and sister.  Sarah Ann's mother was a Johnson, but there are no other MATHER+JOHNSON births registered.

In 1861, John and Mary (39 & 48) were at Little Ireland, Piklington with their niece Elizabeth E Harper (17) and Emma Harper (14). 1812 Mary Johnson John Mather a weaver & Mary Johnson married at Manchester Cathederal in 1836.  James Johnson was a witness.

John and Mary Mather (20 & 30), were at Plikington in 1841 with Sarah Ann (2) and Ann Johnson (30).  It could be that this is another couple, brother and sister!

In 1861, John and Mary (39 & 48) were at Little Ireland, Piklington with their niece Elizabeth E Harper (17) and Emma Harper (14); a HARPER+SANDIFORD family. 1811 Lawrence Wroe In 1830, Lawrence Wroe was witness to John Batley's marriage to Betty Mather.  They were probably neighbours living in Pilkington.

13 Sep 1832, Larwince and Maria Knowles married at St Peter Bolton.

In 1841, Lawrence Wroe (Irish) and his wife Maria (both 30) lived in Pilkington with their children Mary, Richard and John (8,6 & 4).  Lawrence and Maria were neighbours of John and Mary Mather.
 1811 Maria Knowles 13 Sep 1832, Larwince and Maria Knowles married at St Peter Bolton.  Maria's witness was William Knowkes who was probably her brother.

Lawrence Wroe was Irish and his wife Maria (both 30) lived in Pilkington in 1841 with their children Mary, Richard and John (8,6 & 4). 1810 Betty Mather Not sure what happened to Betty, the daughter of Solomon.  No death records, and no marriages with Solomon named.  Most probably married John Bayley in 1830 (both single) as their daughter Alice was baptised at Edgworth:

4 June 1830, John Bayley married Betty Mather. Their witness was Lawrence Wroe.  Two years later, Lawrence Roe married Maria Knowles.  Lawrence who was Irish and Maria (both born about 1810) lived in Pilkington in 1841 when Lawrence and Maria were neighbours of John and Mary Mather nee Johnson  (20 & 30), so perhaps Betty had a brother John.   1838 - 1860 Sarah Ann Mather 21 21 ~1791 - 1854 Thomas Grundy 63 63 Thomas's father was Probably John Grundy (aged 70 in 1841) and living next door at Waterloo.

14 Oct 1811 Thomas married Mary Rewbottom (Rowbottom?) at Bolton.  There is also a Thomas Grundy that married Mary Mather in 1808 and Mary Cunliffe in 1808, so which one?

In 1841, Thomas, John and James are three possible brothers, all Weavers and all neighbours with John (Father?) at Waterloo, Bolton.  Thomas and Mary (both 50) had assumed children William (18) and Betty (15), and also Sarah Mather (35) with Ann (10) and John (1)
