In  1861, Alice was 8 years old and at school.

Alice had left home by 1881
1855 - 1931 Samuel Mather 76 76 Samuel had left home by 1881

18 Sep 1875, Samuel Mather married Sarah Ann Williams at St Paul's, Astley Bridge.

In 1901, Samuel and Sarah A (45 & 46) were living at 39 Broad O'th Lane, Astley Bridge with Mary A (25), William (22), Samuel (19), Margaret (16), and Martha (12)

In 1911, Samuel and Sarah Ann were still in Bolton, with daughters Mary Ann and Margaret. The 1911 census shows they had 4 children.
1859 - 1885 Margaret Mather 25 25 After Hannah died, James would have been left with his son John in 1841, but cant be found on the census records.  There was a James (27) from Haslingden with his mother Alice (60), which could be him!

Margaret was still with her parents Samuel and Ann in 1881 (aged 22), but had left by 1891, presumed married.

Margaret Jane Sale (nee Mather) in 1891 was married to John Sale.  This is another, who's parents were Thomas and Mary Mather.
1847 - 1923 Happy Collings 75 75 Happy was possibly named after Happy Mather, the sister of Samuel Mather. In 1871 James Cuncliffe Hamer and Happy Hamer were neighbours of Samuel and Ann Mather.

His first wife probably died about 1841, and after a suitable time found a new younger partner, Alice Mather.  She would have already been 6 or 7 months pregnant with George when they married on 6-Oct-1844.

Can't find him on 1841 census, so unable to match his first wife and family with son John (b.1835).

In 1849 James Brookes was a witness at the wedding between Samuel Mather (his brother-in-law, Ann's brother) and Ann Nightingdale.
