In 1851, Samuel (7) was living at 1 Simpson Street, Little Bolton, Lancashire with parents and sisters Eliza (13) and Jane (4).

In 1861, Samule (17) was living at 2 Nuttall Square (off Blackburn Rd), Little Bolton (Halliwell) with parents Isaac and Mary (51 & 49) and siblings Jane (15) and Wiliam (9).

In 1871, Samuel (29, Head) and William (19) were spinners  living at 51 Halliwell Road (with Martha Murry, aged 60, a housekeeper). 

4 May 1872, Samuel Mather, Spinner, son of Isaac Mather a weaver married Sarah Booth, a widow, daughter of Thomas Birchall, a forgeman at St George's, Little Bolton.

The 1877 the marriage of Samuel Mather to Selina J Cooper may be another (a wealthy family with large monument for Selina in Southport), although this is probably another from Manchester. However, Samuel does appear to have left Sarah.

In 1881, Samuel Mather was married (38), lodger with Pennington family at Westhoughton and still in Westhoughton in 1891, near brother and family.

In 1881, after Martha's second husband James France had died, Samuel Mather (38, mar) was lodging with Martha Pennington.  He is probably the father of Mary Ellen Pennington (as her death record records her father as Samuel Pennington). Mary Ellen recorded her MMN as Pennington on the first three UK births of her children, but Mather for Cecil, also hinting as Samuel being her father.

Samuel was recorded as Married in 1881, but single again in 1891, so did he marry?  Well YES, as in 1901 he's recorded as a widower, so 1891 is probably an error.

In 1883, Samuel Mather Patterson married Catherine Sharp at Bolton Holy Trinity. This is another person, the widowed son of John Patterson.

In 1891 Isaac’s daughter Eliza Pendlebury (52, Wid) had moved into 4 Simpson Street. With her were two sons John and Israel (24 & 21) and her brother Samuel Mather (47, Single) was visiting.

Was living alone in 1901 at 19 Simpson St, still a cotton spinner. The 13 July 1844 Bolton Chronical Newspaper reported the death of Mr Peter Mather of Tong, near this town.  This is the only Lancashire Peter Mather death with age within 2y.

The Peter who married Ellen Hardman 28-Jun-1846 at St. Helens was the son of John Mather, so this isnt our Peter! 1821 - 1889 James Mather 68 68 In 1841, James (15) was at Dandy Row, Sharples (at the North end of Astley Bridge) with his father and brother John (and Thomas).

In 1851, James and Susan (both 29) were at 138 Blackburn Road, Astley Bridge, Sharples with Hannah (8) and Ellen (3) and James (1).  James's brother Thomas (21) was also there, and Joseph Cooper (lodger, 23).

In 1864, James was at Astley Bridge when Fred was baptised.

1878-79 James was a Shopkeeper at 1 Cross Lane, Bolton when daughters Alice and Rachel married.

28 Dec 1889, James, Provision Dealer died at 8 Mortfield Lane. 1824 - 1891 Sarah Blackburn 67 67 Sarah's father was Robert Blackburn a chair worker from Sharples (shown on marriage of 1846). Sarah's father Robert died, and Sarah and Henry were living with her mother Ann (66, widower) in 1851 (and 1861) 1823 - 1881 Susanna (Susan) Whalley 58 58 Susannah's father is Giles Whalley

In 1841, Susan was 18 with parents Giles and Hannah at Spring Garden, W Bolton 1843 - 1896 Hannah Mather 52 52 Hannah's birth was registered as WHALLEY at Halliwell in 1843 before the couple were married.

Hannah was with her parents in 1851 and 1861, and there is no matching death after 1861, so she must have married.  There are 11 Lancashire Hannah Mather marriages between 1861 and 1871 and the 4 for Bolton and Bury are most likely:

The 1870 marriage is the nearest church to Shaples. Also  Hannah Ward is the correct age and born Halliwell.


 1847 - 1906 Ellen Mather 59 59 In 1889 when her father died, Ellen was recorded as a spinster on the probate record.

In 1901, Ellen (53) was living in Blackpool with her sister Rachel and broth-in-law Andrew Low. 1850 - 1898 James Mather 48 48 In 1871, James was a "Loomer" with his parents in Halliwell when he was 21.

In 1874 James Mather married Maria Hulme.  However, this may have been James H Mather (i.e. another)

In 1881, James Mather, (Unmarried, 32, born Astley Bridge) was at Cod Hall, Horwich, with a lodger, farming 4 acres.  Had he left Maria?  Walter was born about 1884, but must have been an adopted son (as no birth registered under that name).

In 1891, James and Maria (40 & 39) and family (but no Walter) were at 26 Vermont Street, Halliwell.  James was a cotton spinner.  James's father-in-law Isaac Hulme (80) was with them.


 1851 - 1933 Giles Mather 81 81 5 Jul 1876, Giles Mather (24), Warehouseman of 1 Bailey Street, son of James Mather a spinner married Sarah Brooks (22) of 54 Princess Street, daughter of Thomas Brooks a collier.

In 1881, Giles and "Charlotte" (29 & 27) were at 2 Raby Street, Little Bolton with their son Thomas B Mather (3).

In 1901, Giles and his son Thomas were both Yeast Importers when Thomas married. 1853 Alice Mather 10 Jul 1878, James Holland, a minder of 57 Turton Street, son of William Holland a twister married Alice Mather of 1 Cross Lane, Bolton, daughter of James Mather a Shopkeeper at Bolton St George. 1855 - 1926 Rachel Mather 70 70 13 Jul 1879, Andrew Low, a joiner of 8 Howarth Street, son of Andrey Halley Low, also a joiner married Rachel Mather of 1 Cross Lane, Bolton, daughter of James Mather a Shopkeeper at Bolton St George. 1858 - 1861 Richard Mather 3 3 Richard was aged 3 in 1861, but missing in 1871.

Richard died in Sep 1861, aged 3 1860 - 1883 Nathaniel Mather 22 22 In 1881, Nathaniel (son) was 20 at 1 Cross Lane, Little Bolton

In 1883, Nathaniel died, aged 22.  There are no marriage records. 1852 - 1907 Rachel Mather 55 55 In 1871, Rachel married John Edmondson as a civil marrrige.

Most of their children died as infants.

22 Sep 1894, Rachel Edmondson (41, widow), daughter of Henry Mather married John Pilkington 1848 Mary Ann Mather 1832 - 1897 Ann Roper (Mather) 65 65 In 1841, Ann (10) and Robert (7) were possibly step-children of Richard, living with him at Club Houses, Sharples.  Ann took the name Mather and named her father Richard on her 1859 marriage.

Ann seems unlikely to have been Richard's daughter as he was only 15 when she was born, although Elizabeth was older. However Richard Mather, carder, was recorded as the father on the 1851 census and on her 1859 marriage record.  Also Ann names her children after her grandparents Richard and Hannah.

In 1856, Ann had a son Thomas Wilkinson.  The burth was recorded in Halliwell, and Ann (actually not married) recorded the mother's maiden name as ROPER, so Thomas is possibly her mother's (maybe illegitimate) child.

17 Sep 1859, Ann (X), 26, Tenter, daughter of Richard Mather, carder, married James Barlow, 22, grinder, son of Richard a shoemaker.  Both living at Bradshaw Street, L.B.

In 1861, James and Ann (24 & 29) were at 10 Bread Street, Little Bolton with Thomas Wilkinson (step-son, 5) and Richard (son, 1)

In 1871, James, a stripper & grinder, and Ann (32 & 36) were living at 13 Bread Street, Little Bolton with Thomas (17), Richard (11) and Ann (8). There was no George.

In 1881, Ann Barlow (44, Wid) was at 30 Homer Street, Little Bolton with Richard (21), Hannah (18), George H Barlow (12) and daughter Mary E Griffith (1).

In 1886, Son Richard of 30 Homer Street married Alice Seddon. His father (James) was deceased.

In 1891, Ann (56, wid) was living on her own means at 30 Homer Street, Little Bolton with daughter Hannah (28). 1839 - 1873 James Barlow 34 34 17 Sep 1859, both Ann (26) and James (22) are living at Bradshaw St, Little Bolton when married.  James's father was Richard Barlow (~1814-1866), a shoemaker and mother Martha Hamer (1807-1875).

In 1861, James and Ann (24 & 29) were at 10 Bread Street, Little Bolton with Thomas Wilkinson (step-son, 5) and Richard (son, 1)

In 1871, James, a stripper & grinder, and Ann (32 & 36) were living at 13 Bread Street, Little Bolton with Thomas (17), Richard (11) and Ann (8)

James had died before 1881

 1853 - 1936 Sarah Brook 83 83 5 Jul 1876, Giles Mather (24), Warehouseman of 1 Bailey Street, son of James Mather a spinner married Sarah Brooks (22) of 54 Princess Street, daughter of Thomas Brooks a collier.

Sarah is buried with her parents (Jane & Thomas Brooks) and husband (Giles Mather) 1819 - 1895 Henry Mather 75 75 Henry's baptism shows he was from Harwood and in 1871, from Harwood Lee.  Other family records indicate Raikes (a farm at Harwood Lee), so this is probably where Henry was born.

Henry had 6 daughters and no sons - poor guy!  Only three of the girls survived pas the age of 5, and they each married.

In 1841, Henry Mather (22) is with Ann (19) at Bank Street, Little Bolton, so who is Ann. It cannot be a sister, unlikely a wife, so probably another Henry Mather

According to the 1846 marriage record, Henry is a spinner and father Richard a Labourer (not longer a Weaver)

In 1851, 61, 71 census, Henry is shown to have been born at Harwood Lee (or simply Harwood), and an outdoor labourer. All the family were born here!

In 1876 his daughter Sarah Jane (19) of 2 Yates Square married a neighbour William Hutchinson (23) of 5 Yates Square.

He must have had a big house at Yates Square, LB as in 1891 he's a general labourer (71) with wife Sarah (65), grandson Henry Hutchinson and 8 lodgers. 1863 - 1865 Frederick (Fred) Mather 2 2 1845 - 1847 William Mather 2 2 1808 - 1848 Elizabeth Roper 40 40 Elizabeth from Sharples was the daughter of William Roper, a Quarryman.

Elizabeth married Richard Mather (Carder, son of Richard) in 1837, after Ann and Robert had been born,  Richard was recorded as a Cotton Striper in the 1841 census, at Club Houses, Sharples.

Elizabeth's father William Roper (65) and was living with the family at Club Houses, Sharples in 1841.  He was described as a Quarry Man from Sharples on her marriage certificate but now an Ag Labourer.. 1845 - 1846 William Mather 9m 9m 1841 - 1932 Martha Mather 90 90 In 1841, Martha was 2 months, living with parents Richard and Elizabeth at Club House, Sharples.

In 1859, Martha (Ann's closest sister) waa witness to Ann's marriage.

15 Jan 1860, Martha Mather (Full)  Spinster of Little Bolton, daughter of Richard Mather a Carder married Thomas Pennington a warper at St George's, Little Bolton.

In 1861, Thomas and Martha (22 & 20) were at Back Charles Street, Little Bolton with son John (6 mo)

In 1881, "Martha France", wid, 39 was at 259 Church Street, Westhaughton with John Richard Pennington (13), Louisa (10) and Lily (5) and Samuel Mather a lodger (38).

11 Feb 1878, Martha Pennington, wid, 35, Roller Coverer of 2 Walkers Court, Daughter of Richard "Marsh" (should be Mather), Carder married James France, 46, Collier, Widower of 1 Cook's Court at Holy Trinity, Bolton.

In 1879, James France (probably an orphan), died a year after his marriage so Mathas France was now a widow.

In 1881, "Martha France", wid, 39 was at 259 Church Street, Westhoughton with John Richard Pennington (13), Louisa (10) and Lily (5) and Samuel Mather a lodger (38).

In 1891, Martha "Mather", wid, 49 was at 23 Hardy Street with John R Pennington (23), Louisa (20), Lily (15) and Mary E (9).

In 1901, Martha Pennington, wid, 59 was at 36 Norwood Grove with Lily (25) and Mary E (19).

In 1911, Martha Pennington (69) was visiting her daughter Mary Ellen Standish.

Died 1932 (tbc) 1853 Elizabeth Lee (Mather) There isnt a birth registered for MATHER+LEE (Except Sarah J Mather, Edgworth, 1856).  That is because Elizabeth was born (and the birth registered Q4/1853) before they were married.

Elizabeth was baptised 25 May 1855 when Richard was a Carder in Little Bolton (probably Harwood).

In 1861, she was known as Elizabeth Mather which must have been confusing as there was her cousin (and perhaps adopted sister), Elizabeth Mather, Robert Mather's daughter.

Elizabeth's mother Betsy died in 1861, and father Richard 5 years later, so in 1866 Elizabeth, aged 13, probably went into service.

After 1871, it is not obvious what happened to Elizabeth.  She didit die.  Sha may have married John Rice in 1867 but not Robert Roberts in 1870.  1847 Ellen Mather Ellen, daughter of Richard a carder and Elizabeth of Sharples was baptised 24 April 1847.

In 1851, Ellen was 4, with parents Richard and Jane and sister Martha (10) and step-brother Robert (17) at Sharples 1843 - 1844 Alice Mather 1 1 1838 - 1840 Hannah Mather 1 1 1840 - 1840 John Mather 2m 2m 1823 - 1861 Betsy Lee 38 38 Betsy's father was Thomas Lee, a painter 1833 William Rostron 3 Mar 1833 William was baptised in Sharples, son of Henry and Margaret Rostron nee Norris (m. 23-Aug-1830).  Henry was a crofter.  He had sisters Ann b.1830 and Rachel b.1837 and a brother Benjamin b.1839

In 1851, William (18) was with his mother Margaret (42, born Chorley) and siblings George (15), Rachel (13) and Benjamin (11) on the Blackburn Road, Sharples.

In 1861, William Rostron (25, born Turton) was a porter, lodging at Clegg Street, Manchester. He appears to have a brother John (16, born Maccesfield) lodging a carter with him.

This William seems to have travelled the world (tbc) ~1745 - >1799 John Knowles 54 54 1768-1772 John was in Bolton/Turton when married, and had James and Sally baptised.

1780-1786, the Abode was Horwich (for Hannah) and Blackrod (1784 for Samuel), then Howich again for Rachel (1786).  Baptisms were at Horwich Lee (independant).

Sally is the only daughter to be recorded at St. Ann, Turton. 1769 - 1791 James Knowles 22 22 James son of John & Jane Knowles of Turton, Yeoman 1802 - 1884 Nathaniel (Nathan) Mather 82 82 Baptism records for Nathaniel are missing but it is very likely he is the son of Richard and Hannah from Harwood.

15 Oct 1821, Nathaniel married Nancy Bromily but she died soon after giving birth to their first son the following year.

In 1822, Nathaniel of Harwood (and Alice), Weaver had a son John baptised.

3 July 1825, Nathaniel married again.  His signature is a good match with his previous amrriage.

In 1834, the family were at Heaton Norris (when Hannah and John baptised)

Nathaniel and family lived in Middleton from 1841 onwards.

In 1841, Nathanial and Alice (40 & 35)  were at Middleton with Peter (15), William (15), Hannah (11), John (7), Nancy (3) and Nathaniel (1).

In 1851, Nathaniel and Alice (49 & 45) were at Chadderton, Middleton with William & Eliza (23 & 19, dau-in-law) and John (17), Nancy (14), Nathaniel (13), Joseph (7) and Alice (5).

In 1861, Nathanial and Alice (59 & 55) were with their daughter Alice (16) and grandaughter Alice A Bailey (7).

In 1871, Nathanial and Alice (69 & 65) were with their daughter Alice (26) and grandchildren Sarah Bailey (22, born Middleton) and Alice Ann Bailey (17, born Hulme).

In 1881, aged 89, after wife Alice died, he was a borader with his daughter Nancy and Richard Thorpe and family.

In Jan 1882, Nathaniel Mather of Thorpe Street, Rhodes died, aged 82 1797 - >1851 Jane Mather 54 54 Jane (b.1797) was from Tomlin Fold

In 1851, Jane was aged 54 and 12 years older than Richard.  She had a son Robert (stepson of Richard Mather, born ~1834, Age 17) 1816 - 1864 John Mather 47 47 John was baptised a Presbyterian.

This John travelled to the US with his sister-in-law Ellen on 1 Mar 1841 sailing on the Stephen Whitney.  They reached New York on 20 April, a crossing of a little over 7 weeks.  He must have come back on a steamship (but not the President as that was lost March 1841) as he was home in time for the 1841 census on 6 June.  The Siddons departed NY of 25 April 1841, and arrive at Liverpool 17 or 18 May.  That could be how he got back!

In 1841, John was at Dandy Row, Sharples (Astley Bridge) with his father.

John emigrated to Maryland, USA.  In 1858, two years after his brother William had died he married William's widdow Ellen.

In July 1863 John was put in a military prison for 7 days for selling liquor to soldiers.  He was released 3 August. 1819 - 1895 Henry Mather 75 75 Henry's baptism shows he was from Harwood and in 1871, from Harwood Lee.  Other family records indicate Raikes (a farm at Harwood Lee), so this is probably where Henry was born.

Henry had 6 daughters and no sons - poor guy!  Only three of the girls survived pas the age of 5, and they each married.

In 1841, Henry Mather (22) is with Ann (19) at Bank Street, Little Bolton, so who is Ann. It cannot be a sister, unlikely a wife, so probably another Henry Mather

According to the 1846 marriage record, Henry is a spinner and father Richard a Labourer (not longer a Weaver)

In 1851, 61, 71 census, Henry is shown to have been born at Harwood Lee (or simply Harwood), and an outdoor labourer. All the family were born here!

In 1876 his daughter Sarah Jane (19) of 2 Yates Square married a neighbour William Hutchinson (23) of 5 Yates Square.

He must have had a big house at Yates Square, LB as in 1891 he's a general labourer (71) with wife Sarah (65), grandson Henry Hutchinson and 8 lodgers. 1853 - 1893 John Edmondson 40 40 Indexed as John Edemmonson on 1871 marriage record.

John (30) had his widowed mother Mary (69) living with him in 1881. 1852 - 1929 John Pilkington 77 77 In 1901, John and Rackel (both 48) were living at 30 Thomas Street East (?) with Anne E (11) and John P (5)

In 1911, John was at 13 Chapel Street, Little Bolton with son John and other relatives 1889 Ann Edmondson Ann Edmondson (Pilkington)

In 1907, Annie's mother Rachel died.

In 1911, Annie Edmonson (22) was an Inmate at Cakhill Home,  Mandley Park Avenue, Cheetham Hill, Manchester. 1872 Sarah Jane Edmondson 1879 - 1881 John Edmondson 2 2 1847 John Warbrick John's parents were William (a wheelwright from Kirkham) and Ann. 1852 William Hutchinson William's father was Joseph Hutchinson (b. 1827 Bolton), and his mother Jane Wood (b. 1820 Ormskirk).

In 1881 it appears William may have left his new wife and child, and become a mariner.  He was on the Antler crew list in Liverpool in 1877 when Sarah would have been pregnant.  It could have been alother William though (there are a few with similar DOB).

There are baptisms for the children showing William as the father and "Sarah Jane", so they must have lived in Little Bolton for a whiole.

William (58) ended up in Farnworth (workhouse) in 1911, a coal bagger, widowed. 1879 Heney Hutchinson In 1891, Henry Hutchinson (12) and his mother Sarah J (23) were with his grandparents Henry and Sarah Mather (60 & 57) at 2 Yates Square, E Bolton.

Single in 1939, DOB 2 Mar 79 1876 - 1879 Jane Hutchinson 2 2 1881 - 1935 Hannah Hutchinson 54 54 The Hannah (22) who married William James Whittel (29) in Salford, 20th May 1906 must be another (age out by 2y and her father not an Iron turner). 1890 Sarah Ellen Hutchinson 1815 - 1866 Richard Mather 51 51 Richard, was born in 7 May, baptised Ruhard 14 June 1815.  Parents Richard Mather and Hannah Knowles were living at Rakes, Harwood, Bolton when he was baptised at Walmsley Presbyterian.

24 July 1837, Richard married Elizabeth Roper.  Elizabeth already had Robert Roper, baptised 24 April 1836, abode Halliwell, to be Richard’s step-son and also Ann, his step-daughter.

In 1838, Richard, a carder, was living in Halliwell when daughter Hannah was baptised. In 1840, son John's birth was registered at Sharples.  Hannah and John both died Q1 1840.

In April 1841 Martha was born.  The June census, Richard (25) was a Cotton Striper (?) at Club Houses, Sharples (near his father at Dandy Row, the only other Mather family in Sharples in 1841).  Elizabeth was 35 and her father William Roper 65.  They had Ann (10), Robert (7) and Martha (2mo).

Between 1843 and 1845 Richard and Elizabeth had three more children; Alice, Mary and William.  Alice and William died as infants and Mary disappeared (assumed also died).  Ellen was born in 1847 and she survived infancy but disappeared (possibly adopted) after 1851.

In 1851, Richard (42, Carder) born Harwood was married to Jane (54, born Tomlin Fold) and had Robert (17, step-son) as well as two daughters Martha (10) and Ellen (4).

After wife Elizabeth died, Richard, still a carder, moved to Little Bolton

11 Sep 1854 Richard Mather, widower, carder son of Richard married Betsy Lee.  Their daughter Elizabeth was born there the following year.

In 1860, Richard's brother Robert died.  Richard and Betsy took on his daughter Elizabeth.

By 1861, There was only Richard, born Harwood, and Betsy (43 & 38) at Cunliffe Court, Little Bolton with their daughter Elizabeth (only 8), and Robert's Elizabeth (9, niece). Lucy Dobogan (70) was with them (TBC)

Richard died June 1866, aged 51, Little Bolton, and was buried 6 June at St Paul’s, Astley Bridge.
 1835 Robert Roper (Mather) In 1841, Ann (10) and Robert (7) were children of Richard and Elizabeth, living with them at Club Houses, Sharples.  They may not have been Richard's although he did marry a much older Elizabeth.

In 1851, Robert (17) was described as a stepson of Richard and Jane at Sharples.

NOTE:  Another Robert "Matther" (same age and son of Richard) of Halliwell, born Withnell, married Sarah Smith, witness Miles Matther.  This Robert was on the 1841 census with parents Robert and Ann.

In 1880, Robert Mather (46) and wife Ann from England were hotel keeper in Lowden Cedar, Iowa, USA.  Their 18y old daughter Emma was born in Indiana. 1839 - 1876 Thomas Pennington 37 37 NOTE: George and Annie of Darcy Lever also had children (inc Elizabeth A) registered with MMN Pennington.

15 Jan 1860, Thomas Pennington, a warper, son of John Pennington, also a Warper married Martha Mather at St Georges, Little Bolton.

In 1861, Thomas and Martha (22 & 20) were at Back Charles Street, Little Bolton with son John (6 mo)

In 1867, John R Pennington's birth was registered in Little Bolton, followed by Louisa (1870) and Lilly (1875) in Eastern Bolton (all the births show the MMN as Pennington, not Mather).  Louisa was baptised at Atherton in 1870 and the father "John" is crossed out, so all these births may be illegitimate, not Thomas's children.

Thomas must have died by 1878 when Martha remarried.

In 1881, Thomas's widow Martha France was with the three surviving Pennington children in Westhoughton. 1860 - 1863 John Pennington 3 3 1811 - 1855 Charlotte Mather 44 44 Charlotte Mather (1811-1855) may have known Richard Mather, but was NOT his daughter. 

Another Charlotte b.1821 was a widow of John Mather from Wigan. This was Charlotte Gaskill who married John Mather at Wigan in 1836. John died and 8 May 1859, Charlotte Gaskill (wid) married William Platt b.1810 an umberella manufacturer at Little Bolton All Saints.  They were at 5 Blackburn Road, Little Bolton in 1861.


In 1841, Charlotte (29), was as a female servant (FS) at Sand Holes, Blackburn Street, Sharples.  Richard Mather was the only Mather family in Sharples in 1841. 1836 - 1879 William Westby 43 43 In 1859, William married Jane Stockton (Bolton RO)

In 1861, William was 25, married to Jane and living in Little Bolton.  His father Thomas (68) was living with them.

Anout 1871, the family moved from Little Bolton to Horwich.

In 1881, After William and Jane had both died, Sarah Jane (18), William T (13) and Arthur H (11) lived with their uncle and aunt John and Mary A Stockton 1856 - 1931 Andrew Low 75 75 13 Jul 1879, Andrew Low, a joiner of 8 Howarth Street, son of Andrey Halley Low, also a joiner married Rachel Mather of 1 Cross Lane, Bolton, daughter of James Mather a Shopkeeper at Bolton St George.

In 1888, the family moved from Bolton to Blackpool.

In 1909, Andrew Low was a publican at the Red Lion Hotel when his daughter Jane Alice married Fred Greenwood 1880 - 1960 Edith Mary Low 79 79 In 1901, Edith Mary Low was witness to Thomas and Jane's marriage 1880 - 1952 Alfred Joseph Maddick 71 71 1908 - 1985 Alfred Halley Maddick 77 77 Alfred is the grandfather of Matthew Clark, his Mother's father.  He has a 25.7 cM match with Cory Mather and 23.9 cM with Paul Mather.

18 Sep 1836, this Catharine Mather (spelt with an a) married Abraham Heaply.  Their witness was Joseph Lowe, Catherine's nephew and son of her sister Sarah.

In 1871, Catherine Heapy (62) is living on the Blackburn Road, next door to her sister Ann Mather (70) at nos 41 & 43 Blackburn Road, Sharples.

In 1876, When her sister Ann died, Catherine Heapy was in attendance (see Ann's death cert).

After 1871 the trail goes cold.  She didnt marry Henry Reeve in 1890, as that was the daughter of George.

Sarah Jane emigrated to Winnipeg, Canada. A 1919 record shows her born in Bolton and of Canadian nationality.  Her nearest Relative in Canada was her step-son Geo W (Hutchinson) of 58 Mathewson Ave, Winnipeg.  However, she was travelling with Arthur Hutchinson in 1920. 1884 - 1894 Mary Ann Hutchinson 10 10 There is another Mary Ann Hutchinson, daughter of Joseph and Rosian born L.B. the same year. 1777 - 1851 Richard Mather 74 74 Richard was a Baptist.  He was married by John Lutener (a Baptist Minister).

Richard, like his father, is a weaver, but a labourer in 1846 when Henry married Sarah.

Richard and Hannah were living at Raikes (Rakes), Harwood from 1811 to probably 1830 when Ann and sons Richard and John were baptised.  The 1851 census shows that Richard's first son Nathaniel's daughter Hannah (i.e. his grandaughter) was born at Harwood Lee in 1830.

In 1836, John Howarth, John Haslam and William Knowles are registered (Poll Book) at Raikes.

In 1841, Mary Heaton (60) and George Holt (20) were at "Raikes" (a farm on the Tottington Road). This is the same place!  Richard (60, Ag Lab) was at Dandy Row with sons John (20), James (15) and (possibly adopted son) Thomas (18 or 12 or 8).  Hannah had died in 1839.

In Aug 1844, Solomon Mather, Richard's brother died at Old Ellen's (aka Old Nells).  The informant was Richard Mather, Occupier present at the death at Old Ellen's, Sharples..

Richard travelled to the US with his son John in 1848, and died there in 1851. 1851 Elizabeth Mather Elizabeth, born Q4 1851 was the daughter of Robert Mather.  Her father died in 1860 when she was 8 years.

In 1861, Elizabeth (aged 9) was living with her uncle Richard Mather and Betsy, who already had a daughter Elizabeth (aged 8).

In 1871, Elizabeth (19) was a boarder with James and Jane Thornley.

In Q4 1872, Elizabeth possibly married Orlando Kay at Bury (TBC).

2 Oct 1876, another Elizabeth Mather (daughter of Henry Brew) married William Kirkmam, a stripper and grinder at St John's, Bolton. They were widow and widower, so cant be this Elizabeth.


 1877 Thomas Brooks Mather 5 June 1901, Thomas married Jane Mellor while living at 139 Chorley Old Rd.  He and his father Giles were Yeast Importers.

In 1911, Thomas Brooks Mather and wife Jane (33 & 32) were at 36 Huxley Street, Bolton with Giles (9), Harold (6), Muriel (3) and Wilfred (<1 mo). 1850 - 1920 Maria Hulme 70 70 Maria, born 1850 was aged 1 in 1851, the daughter of Isaac and Betty Hulme, living at 22 Rothwell Street.

In 1891, Maria had her father Isaac Hulme (80) living with her, but there was no son Walter.

In 1901, Maria Mather (47, Wid) was at 1 Victor Street, Bolton with Martha, Joseph, Walter, Polly and Emma.

In 1911, Maria Mather (58, Wid) and her daughter Emma (22) were living with William Tong and his wife Elizabeth (Maria's daughter) 1875 - 1939 Margaret Alice Mather 64 64 1880 - 1906 Martha Ellen Mather 25 25 There were two Martha Ellen births.  The first child in 1879 died, so the next daughter (i.e. this) was also named Martha Ellen. 1882 - 1963 Joseph Mather 81 81 10 July 1909, Joseph married Jane Davies.

In 1891, Joseph (8) was with his parents James and Maria (40 & 39) and family at 26 Vermont Street, Halliwell.

In 1911, James was a Night Watchman living at 48 Virgil Streed, Little Bolton.

Between 1909 and 1923, Joseph and Jane had 9 children, 4 whom survived to adulthood.  The births and deaths were registered in Halliwell except for the period 1911-16 when they were in Little Bolton. 1886 - 1955 Mary (Polly) Elizabeth Mather 68 68 1888 - 1941 Emma Mather 53 53 1886 Walter Battersby Hulme (Mather) In 1891, Walter was missing from the family.  He may have been adopted.  Walter was born about 1884, so must have been an adopted son as no birth registered under that name. Also Mary was born in 1884, so no space for another birth.

Walther was an illegitimate child, birth registered Q1/1885 at Bolton and named Watter Battersby Hulme.  He is most lilkely a nephew of Maria's, adopted as her own.

In 1891, Walter Battersby (5) was with parents Thomas Battersby and Hannah Hulme (38 & 36), who were brother and sister.  His siblings were Susannah (12), John (6) William (3) and Bertha Battersby (1)

In 1901, Walter (17) was living with his mother and siblings. 1884 - 1885 Mary Edith Mather 1 1 1876 - 1878 Nathaniel Mather 1 1 Nathaniel, son of James Mather, West Street, Great Lever was buried at St Michael, Lever 7 Jan 1852, aged 1 1874 William Calderley 5 Oct 1895, William Calderley (21), Cotton Operative, Bachelor, 20 Herschell St. married Margaret Alice Mather at St Thomas the Apostle, Halliwell. 1889 William Thomas Tong 1889 - 1962 James Stones 73 73 James, son of Thomas Stones (28) married Emma Mather, 21 April 1917.

20 Apr 1834, Robert Mather, a (cotton) spinner, married Mary Carr, but had no children (that survived) until 1839.

In 1835, Robert was witness to his sister Rachel's marriage to John Entwistle.

In 1841, Robert and Mary (both 25) were at Ormond's Houses, Lowton, Leigh with son John (2).  Thomas Moore (aged 14) was also with them.  After Robert died, it was Thomas who in 1861 would take in Nancy and Peter.

Between 1839 and 1851, John and Mary CARR had their 5  children (all birth records show mother's maiden name CARR) in W Bolton, E Bolton, Sharples and then back to W Bolton.

In 1848, Robert Mather aged 36, was imprisoned for 4 months for larceny.  This Robert (Machine/Calico Printer) may be the one the married Mary (Ann) Walmsley at Manchester in 1827 and were in Salford in 1841, athough age is spot on!

In 1851, Robert and Mary (both 28 but should be 38) were lodging at 29 Andrew Street with John, Nancy and Peter (12, 7 & 4)  Their daughter Elizabeth wasnt born until the end of 1851.

NOTE: This may be another Ann Mather (e.g. Ann b.1804, daughter of Charles and Alice). George Dunn also married an Ann Mather on 11-Apr-1833. There are no Records for an Ann and George Dunn in Bolton.  There is also a well defined and unrelated Jonathan Booth and Eliza Mather family from Little Bolton.

Ann Booth was a Widow, 30 in 1841, 40 (or 46) in 1851, 50 in 1861 with daughter Jane Booth (8,18,28) living in East Bolton, so this could be her.  Ann Booth (mothers Maiden Name Mather) was born in 1838 in East Bolton, but there is no death before 1842.

In 1861, Thomas was absent from his family (who were living at Lower Park, Walmersley).

In 1871, Thomas (40) was a clogger with wife Mary A (40) and Mary (17), Robert (16), Isaac (14), Betty (12 and Maria (10) at 57 Lorel Street, S Bury.

In 1881, Thomas and Mary Ann (both 50) were at 32 Oxford Street, S Bury with Mary (27), Betty (22), Maria (20) and nieces Alice and Elizabeth Taylor (15 & 12)

In 1891, Thomas (60, born Nuttall) was at Holcombe with Mary A (61), daughter Mary (36) and niece Elizabeth Taylor (21)

In 1911, Thomas (79), born Hawkshaw, was with daughter (John and) Maria Fenton.  He died later that year leaving £267 and John Fenton was the executor. 1839 - 1904 Daniel Longworth 64 64 Daiel was the son of Robert Longworth, a Crofter. Daniel and Ann married in 1864 and had 7 children, but only two survived adulthood.

They married and started their family in Little Bolton, and moved to Horwich about 1866 after Louisa Blanch was born.

In 1871, Daniel and Ann (31 & 30) were at 3 Latham Row, Horwich with Louisa Blanch (6) and Alice (1).

In 1881, Daniel (41, Wid) was a finisher at 4 Latham Row, Horwich with Louisa Blanch (16), William (8), and Annie (5).

In 1888, Daniel Longworth married Elizabeth Dawson.

In 1891, Daniel and Elizabeth Longworth (51 & 39) were at Horwich with son William (18).

In 1901, Daniel (60) was at 4 Latham Row with his second wife Elizabeth (49) and daughter Elizaneth (9) 1807 - 1847 Catherine Mather 40 40 Born after Jan 1806 if 40 when died.  However may be born about 1804 if daughter Betty (1818-1819) was hers.

Likely missing daughter of Richard Mather and Hannah Knowles, born in the gap where baptism records are missing, and close sister of Nathaniel Mather.  Supported by strong DNA to Cory Mather and one person.  If this is so, then Catherine and Betty Mather (illegitimate daughters) are probably hers.

In 1828, Cathrine Mather married Robert Longworth at St Peter's, Bolton.  After they married, they lived at Entwistle, which is where Jane, and most later children were born.

In 1841, Robert and Catherine (both 35) were at Knowley,  Chorley with Jane (12), William (10), John (8), Nancy (6), Sarah (4) and Daniel (2).

In March 1847, Catherine Longworth died less than a month and possibly while giving birth to twins John and Robert.  John also died and they were buried the same day at Horwich Holy Trinity. In 1891, William (60) was a Grocer at Horwich with wife Jane (42), Nancy (30) and three step-daughters.

William and second wife Jane were living at Latham Row, Horwich (i.e. his parents home in 1851) at the time of William's death in 1891. 1833 John Longworth There's somthing mixed up about John's family.  Alice is missing her birth registration, and in 1862 there is a birth registered for Nancy who later appears as part of brother Wiliam's family.

In 1851, John (16) was with his father in Horwich.

Daughter Alice L Wright was registered in 1857, before John married Mary Ann Wright on 5 Sep 1857 at Horwich Chapel.

In 1861, John and Mary Ann (28 & 22) were at Horwich with two daughters; Alice (3) and Elizabeth Ann (1).

In 1871, Mary Ann Longworth (32) and her four daughters were visiting her parents Owen and Ellenor Wright at Horwich.  John (38, Married, a Calco Printer finisher) was lodging in Levenshulme with Nathaniel and Margery Bradshaw.

In 1881, John and Mary Ann Longworth (49 & 42) were in Bridgeton, Glasgow Barony, Lanarkshire with Alice W (23), Eliza Ann (21) and Eleanor (10) 1835 - 1861 Nancy Longworth 26 26 Nancy was baptied twice, first St Ann's, Turton and then  Edgworth Independent 5 months later.

In 1857, Nancy was witness to John's marriage to Mary Ann Wright 1837 Sarah Ann Longworth There is no GRO birth registration for longworth with MMN = MATHER

Sarah Ann had two children before she married; Robert (b.1859) and Esther (b.1865).

In 1866 Sarah Ann LONGWORTH married Thomas HART at Bolton Register Office or Registrar Attended 1829 - 1890 Jane Longworth 60 60 3 Nov 1850, Jane, daughter of Robert Longworth married Thomas Archer at St Mary's Deane

In 1851, Thomas and Jane Archer (23 & 21) were living (lodging) with Jane's father Robert Longworth at Horwich.  The census record shows Jane was born at Entwistle.

 1840 - 1879 Ann Rothwell 39 39 1872 - 1954 William Longworth 81 81 1844 - 1852 Alice Longworth 8 8 Alice must have survived (as no death record), but was not with her family in 1851.

Alice died in Horwich in 1852, aged 8. 1847 - 1847 John Longworth 1m 1m John and Robert were twins born Feb 1847 (adjacent birth records).  John died an "infant" and was buried 13 March  1847, the same day as his mother Catherine.  His twin Robert died aged "16 weeks" and was buried 29 June (so born late Feb or Early March). 1847 - 1847 Robert Longworth 4m 4m Twins John and Robert were born in January 1847.

Robert died, aged 16 weeks, and is buried at Horwich Holy Trinity, 29 Jun 1847.

Headstone shows: Robert Longworth died 28 Feb 1870, aged 64.  He is buried at Horwich Chapel Graveyard, but with wife Mary Lomngworth (1815-1891), not Catherine. This may be another Robert who married widow Mary Mather in 1850. 1844 Mary Mather Missing in 1851, assumed died, but perhaps immigrated to the USA or of another family.  She was born verrt soon after the previous daughter, both with MMN = ROPER. 1867 - 1892 John Richard Pennington 24 24 In 1891, John R Pennington, 23, was single, living with his mother and siblings.  He died in 1892.

John Richard Pennington died at Bolton in 1892, aged 24.
 1870 - 1958 Louisa Pennington 87 87 Louisa was probably illegitimate.  Her birth record shows only PARTINGTON no not different Mother's Maiden Name (which should be MATHER), and no farther is recorded on her baptism.

11 July 1891, Louisa Pennington was witness to Ann Ellen Edwards marriage to Alfred Barlow at St George's, Bolton.  The following year she married here.

5 Nov 1892, Louisa Pennington (22) of 22 Haydock Street, daughter of Thomas Pennington, Warper married John Henry Ashall (21), a Joiner, of 17 Falcon St. Witness: John Newton; Margaret Ellen Ashall. 1875 - 1949 Lilly Pennington 73 73 1881 - 1946 Mary Ellen Pennington 64 64 Believed to be the daughter of Samuel Mather, who was living with her mother about the time she was concieved.  Also, the 1920 birth of Miles, shows the mother's maiden name as Mather.

All the children were born in Bolton (registered at Halliwell, Bolton) 1893 Henry (Harry) Ashall Henry was the only son with 7 sisters.  Poor guy! 1899 Jessie Ashall Sophie Beesley is the g-granddaughter of Jessie Ashall, and had DNA matches to PM and JY.  Her family moved to Australia 1895 Elsie Ashall Elsie may died young, so it was Henry and Lily who were executors of her father's Will.

In 1901, Elizabeth (aged 9), was at 4 Latham Row, Horwich with parents Daniel and Elizabeth.

In 1911, after both parents had died, Elizabeth (aged 19) was boarding with Joseph (a Tailor) & Catherine Ann Marsh at Turton.

Between 1911 and 1931 there are 5 Elizabeth Longworth marriages in Bolton.  The Elizabeth marriage at St Peter, Halliwell in 1915 to Albert Sharrocks is the most likely (or to Walter Whitehead at Prestolee in 1929 or William H Hunt in 1930 at Bolton RO).  None of these marriages seem to match with children born after the marriage.

13 Jun 1936, Elizabeth Longworth (45), spinster married John William Woodhead was Christ Church, Walmsley.

In 1939, John W and Elizabeth Woodhead were living at 71 Rawson Road, Bolton with one other.

There is no baptism for Catherine, but she may have been the daughter of William and Hannah (as in 1833 their son William named his first daughter Catherine). Also brother Solomon has a Catherine in 1809.  It is also likely she was illegitimate as her assumed sister (or twin) Betty was.

In 1841, Catherine (15) was the youngest of 5 servants working at the Lower House, Toppings, Turton for Eliza Winder.  Lower House is near to the Volunteer Inn and Toppings. She probably was Betty Mather's sister, who was a servant the Volunteer Inn (just across the field).

In 1841, her assumed sister Betty Mather (same age) was living nearby with James and Betty Booth nee Mather and he was also a painter. However, they were from Eccleston at the time of marriage.

23 Nov 1845, Catherine Mather, a miner, daughter of Solomon Mather, farmer, married John Jones, both of Tebbutt Street at Manchester Church.

5 Sep 1852, Catherine (24, daughter of Thomas Mather, labourer) married William Deane, aged 22 a painter at Farnworth.  This cant be her was this Catherine was born 1828.

In 1881, Catherine was a widow at 4 Eagly Bank Park Terrace with 6 children. ~1793 Thomas Green ~1793 Hannah Mather Hannah was probably from Turton as her son Peter Mather was born in Turton Poorhouse. 1813 Peter Mather 1830 Thomas Mather This may be the Thomas son of David Magnall, probably the illegitimate daughter of Betty Mather from Hawkshaw Lane (about 4 miles North of Harwood).

It not clear how old Thomas is.  In 1841, the census age appears to been been altered from 12 to 8.

This may also be the Thomas Lee Mather (1832-1907), born England, who in about 1862 married to Mary in Hartford, Connecticut, USA 1856 - 1857 Sarah Jane Mather 1 1 Sarah Jane Mather, mother LEE was born 1856 and the birth registered at Edgworth (the only Lancashire Sarah Jane born 1856 and another born Manchester Q3-1857)

By 1861 Sarah Jane was not with assumed parents Richard and Betsy.  She died in 1857, aged 1, and the death was recorded at Radcliffe, Bury.

26 Feb 1832, Rachel Mather married Thomas Rosthorn, an engineer, at St Mary's Bury.  Sarah Isherwood was witness.

8 Mar 1835, Rachel Rawsthorn was a widow when she married John Entwistle, a tailor at St Mary's Dean. Her (assumed) brother Robert Mather was witness.

In 1841, Rachel (30) was with Catherine Haslam (70) at Bottom of the Moor, Harwood.  This may be another!

About 1950, (probably John and Rachel Entwistle and) their son Edward emigrated to New York, USA. Rachel left her son William Rostron to be brought up by her father Richard.

In 1860, Rachel Entwisle died, aged 54.  This could be her - TBC 1833 William Rosthorn William was the son of Rachel Mather.  Rachel married Thomas Rosthorn, but he died within a year of their marriage.

23 Feb 1834 William, son of Thomas (deceased) and Rachel Rosthorn of Great Bolton was baptised. "Widow" is shows as occupation.

In 1841, William Rosthorn (indexed William Rasthson), aged 8 was with Richard Mather (60) and his three sons at Dandy Row, Sharples.  This is assumed to be his grandson. Chelsea (chelseaoxley31793) Oxley 1808 - 1856 William Mather 47 47 1 Oct 1832, William Mather married Ellen Conlive at Bolton.  William's brother Robert was witness.

William Mather (1807-1856) settled in Baltimore County, Maryland and went to work in a cotton mill. 

William and Ellen had a few children in the 1830's but they may have died.  On 29 June 1840, William (recorded as aged 30) sailed to America on the Orpheus, temporarily leaving Ellen at home, pregnant with their daughter, Hannah.  Ten months later, Ellen, Hannah and John Mather (William's brother) embarked for America to join William.  The baby, Hannah died shortly after arrival in America.  John may have returned to the UK once Ellen and the baby disembarked in New York.

On the 13 Feb 1833 William Mather of Baltimore, Maryland signed a declaration to become a citizen of the USA

In 1850 (US census), Wlliam (42) was an Inn Keeper in Baltimore with Ellen (38), Samuel (5), Nathanial (3), and his father Richard (73) from England. Matthew Clarke 1917 - 2015 Evelyn Taylor 98 98 Birth Date 24 Aug 1917 with Married name Longworth shown on two 1939 registeres, both for 55 Leicester Avenue, Horwich.  Parents Mabel A Taylor (DOB 27 Apr 1887) and (assumed) Horace DOB 15 Oct 1882 (listed in third place, so may not be the husband and head of household)

28 Dec 1917, Evelyn died at Halesworth, Suffolk 1947 Cecily J Longworth In 1947, Cecily was a Newcastle-upon-Tyne when she married Christopher G Birkin

In 2005, Christopher G Birkin and Cecily J Birkin were living at Kennelmans Cottage, Ferry Road, Bawdsey, IP12 3AU. They had daughters Celia (b.1982) and Louisa (b.1985).
