In 1841, John Mather (15, M.S. for William Gill, a farmer) was the only other Mather in Rumworth in 1841 (other than James Mather b.1792, Hall'ith Wood).
In 1851, John, aged 25, was an Ag. Lab at Bridge Hill Farm, Heaton, working for Richard (29, Head) and Mary Hough. Betty Edge was their servant girl, just 15.
NOTE: There is another older John Mather from Tyldesley, son of Jeffery, who married Alice Knnton at Manchester in 1836.
Things happened, and John and Betty had to quickly get married on 19 June 1853. Their daughter Catherine E Mather was born the same year.

Henry, son of William Mather married Margaret Holden in 1838. Census records show Henry born about 1801 and the only Lancashire MATHER+HOLDEN marriage.
NOTE: This is the only other Mather marriage at Deane (as well as John Mather and Ellen Buckley) between 1837-1840, although several in 1841 and later.
1 Jan 1838, Henry married Margaret Holden at Deane. Margaret is described as a spinster, so Richard was an illegitimate son. Her father was William Holden.
In 1841, Henry and Margaret Mather (41 & 35) are at Wingates, Westhoughton with son (or stepson) Richard Mather (13)
1851, Henry and Margaret (56 & 48) were at Wingates with Richard Holden (23, U, Son) and John Green (78, lodger, probably an uncle as Mother was Mary Green). There was no James.

Samuel was baptised at Peel by Bolton, the son of William and Mary (Green).
The 1813 death record is for Samuel son of William Mather of Worsley, aged 31 years. Had he gone back to his father? Alice gave birth to Ellin in 1813 and then had an illegitimate child Alice in 1915. It seems the marriage had broken down.

Benjamin was William Mather's first (but should be third) son. However, mother is shown as Betty Holme, so perhaps this is another family.

John's first marriage was to Betty Woodward. Brother Geoffery was witness. Betty died in 1835 and was buried at Westhoughton (the only possible burial for a spouse of John).
John and Betty had four (or more) children. First two were baptised at Westhoughton (1814-16), and then Mary and Betty at Winwick (1819-22).

Joseph married Jane in April 1847 and yet when Catherine was baptised the parents were Joseph and Anne. Joseph also recorded his wife Anne in 1851, with both daughters Catherine (4) and Alice (1) present.
It appears Anne and Jane are the same person, same age, silk weaver. Probably the name have been mis-read as Jane and Anne appear very similar on these records. All the childrens birth records show the mother's maiden name as SMITH.

Ann must have died as in 1892, Lawrence married Margaret Hart at Bolton RO. Did Lawrence divorce Ann or was he a bigamist who married Margaret and emigrated to Canada? There is no death for Ann before 1912.
In 1901, Lawrence and Margaret (50 & 34) were at Wingates, Westhoughton with Joseph (24), Mary Jane (15), William (15) and Alice (7)

Edward and Ruth are (the only) two unaccounted burials at Westhoughton. William is the only known possible father of Edward, but no Baptism to prove it. However, there is for William and Alice, and it seems William was married before he married Mary Green, which may explain the big age gap between William and Mary. Edward was the son of William and Alice of Westhoughton, baptised 1782

In 1796 Richard was born in Westhoughton, son of Jane but no father named, although likely to be the son of Robert.
Richard married Elizabeth Buckley in 1824 and acquired a daughter Martha Yetes (b.1808).
In 1841, Richard and Elizabeth (50 & 44) were at Howe Bridge, Atherton with Ellen and Martha Buckley (40 & 33) and Edward (16), James (14), John (12), Richard (10), Ann (7) and Elizabeth (4).
In 1851, Richard (57) was an Inn Keeper and farmer of 5 acres at Howe Bridge, Atherton with his wife Elizabeth (62) and her sister Ellen Buckley (unmarried, 50). They also had their children Martha Yates (43), Edward (25), James (23), John (21) and Ann (15).
Richard had died by 1861.

MaryAnn is probably the daughter of William Mather and Mary, baptised at Bolton 10 April 1803, but there are no Bolton marriage of a William and Mary before 1803, so probably the family from Westhoughton.
In 1819, MaryAnn possibly had an Illegitimate daughter Ruth Mather (who married George Hulme in 1839).
1822-24, recorded as Marianne Rasthorn when Thomas and Mary baptised, and later Mary Ann. All the children's baptisms show their abode as Breightmet. In 1851, daughter Mary Ann Young recorded her birthplace as Breightmet Hill.
Mary Ann France was 48 in 1851, so born about 1803. She is probably the daughter of William and Mary Mather, baptised April 1803. There are no marriages for a William and Mary at Bolton, and her parents are not William Mather and Mary Petty from Billinge, near Wigan, married 31 Oct 1802 as they had a daughter Ann baptised there 12 Dec 1802. William Mather and Mary Rosthern seems much more likely, married at Warrington 22 Aug 1976. William and Mary Green from Westhoughton is another family. William and Mary Clegg married in 1797 is another possibility.
In 1821, Mary Ann Mather married James Rawsthorn at Deane St Mary.
1 June 1835, Mary Ann Rostron, widow, married Richard France, widower.
In 1841, Richard & Ann (both 40) were with Elizabeth (15), Sarah (13) and Ellen France (5), and Thomas (2), Mary Ann (15), William (13) and Ruth Rostron (7); also three France daughters, two from previous marriage and Ellen (5).

Mary was born 2 Jan 1807 at Newton-le-Willows, the daughter of Henry and Sarah and baptised at Newton Chapel.
18 Jul 1836, Mary Taylor married Thomas Mather at Winwick. Thomason Mather died three years later in 1839, aged 24 (ASHT/1/248).

In Q2 1877, Alice Mather married Joseph Hilton at Bolton (need a copy of Marriage Cert to confirm correct Alice) but seems very likely as first two children named after her closest surviving siblings..
In 1881, Alice Hilton (23) was described as the daughter of Alice Hilton (60, head), with her first two sons Jeffrey (3) and Joseph (7mo). Birth records confirm the mother's maiden name was Mather. Joseph was absent.
The family emigrated to Iowa, USA before Reuben was born in 1886.

Moses Mather was illegitimate. No father was named on the birth index.
In 1871, Moses was 7, living with his grandparents Simon and Alice Radcliffe (53 & 47).
In 1881, Moses Radcliffe (18), Son (probably of Catherine Radcliffe, unmarried, 36) was a Coal Miner at 1 Lee Fold, Westhoughton. Simon and Alice Radcliffe (63 & 57) were head of household.
In 1891, Moses, a Coal Miner, and Ann (27 & 26) were at 43 Manchester Road, Westhoughton with James, Mary E and Joseph (4, 2 & 2mo)
Moses became an indurance agent in later life. He and wife Ann both died in Blackpool.
Moses names one of his sons William Adamson Mather, so confirming this civil marriage to Ann Adamson in 1885 (when he was 22).
Moses is buried at Westhoughton in the same grave as Zilpha
