James was from the town of Manchester when he married Ann (a widow) in Manchster Cathederal.

James was a Non-Conformist, having his son Joseph baptised at Tildsley Chapel.

1802-1812, baptims records show William, Alice, Ellen and Mary were probably born at Penington, Westleigh
~1772 Ann Oliver Ann was a widow from Manchester when she married James Mather 1802 William Mather 1804 Alice Mather Alice was born at Penington, West Leigh.  This was home of one of the ancient Mather families of the 15th cent. 1808 Ellen Mather 1812 Mary Mather ~1796 Mary Jones or Harrison In 1841, Richard and Mary Lee (40 & 50) were with Betty, Jane, Thomas, Ellen, Ann, John and Richard Mather.  They also had Mary and Ellen Lee (9 & 7) at Alfred Street, Tyldesley. 1820 Elizabeth (Betty) Mather In 1841, Betty (20) was with her mother and step-father Richard and Mary Lee at Atherton.  She was listed first in the second sequence of children after Mary and Ellen Lee (9 & 7) 1821 Mary Mather 11 Jan 1841, Mary Mather, daughter of John a weaver married William Howcroft, a miner, both of Middle Hulton

In 1851, Mary Dixon (29, Wid) was Richard's (21) sister and had a daughter Ellen Dixon (4).
1825 - 1910 Ellen Mather 85 85 1824 - 1889 Thomas Mather 65 65 1817 - <1828 John Mather 11 11 No father named on baptism, but baptised John "Mather", daughter of Mary Mather.

Had died young as another John baotised in 1828
1826 Ann Mather In 1851, Ann was living with her younger brother Richard at Ttldesley. 1814 - 1815 Robert Mather 1 1 1817 - 1866 Ellen Mort 49 49 Ellen Mort baptised 1817, daughter of John and Ann.  However, apparant age was born 1821 in 1861 and when died in 1866.

In 1866, Ellen died aged 45 (should be 49)
1818 - 1844 Ellen Farnworth 26 26 Based on Edward born 1844, his mother's maiden name was Farnworth.  There were no other children (registered in Cheshire)

Ellen, daughter of Richard Farnworth married John "Marlor" at Oldham St Mary. The BMD Index has John "Mather" indexed, and they were living at Duckinfield in 1843 when Edward was born.
~1780 John Mort John is named father on Ellen's marriage of 1845. 1783 Ann Mort Ann (78) was living with John and Ellen in 1861 1850 Mary Ann Mather 1855 - 1913 Thomas Mather 57 57 In 1861 Thomas wag aged 5 with parents John and Ellen Mather (41 & 40) at Chowbent Road with Edward (17), Mary Ann (11), and grandmother Ann Mort (78) 1859 - 1933 John James Mather 73 73 <unknown> 1816 - 1822 James Mather 5 5 1761 - 1799 Ellen Green 38 38 1792 - 1795 James Mather 3 3 1798 Samuel Mather 1794 - 1866 Jane Mather 72 72 In 1813, Jane married Nathan Monks at Leigh

In 1841, Nathan and Jane (both 50) were at Howell Croft, West   Bolton with Edward (20), James (20) and John (6).

In 1851, Jane (Wid, Head, 58) was at 27 Water Street, West Bolton with James (28) and Mary (22) and Ann Greenhalgh (22), lodger.

In 1861, Jane (72) was the mother-in-law of Richard (and Mary) Leddon.
1766 Samuel Mather Samuel was a Weaver, and also shown as a pauper in 1794 on Jane's baptism, although not later on son Samuel's.

Samuel & Ellen married at Leigh. had baprisms at Atherton, and burials at Deane.

In 1799, Samuel's wife Ellen died.  Samuel does not appear to have remarried.
1796 - 1834 James Mather 38 38 This is not the James b.1792 from Rumworth in 1841.  The 1851 cesus shows that James was born in Turton

James did NOT marry Betty Jameson on 5th Jan 1815 at Leigh.  That was another older James Mather b.1792 Atherton that lived to over 80.

Therefore, this leaves James b.1796 from Hindley who was buried at Deane in 1834, aged 38.  He may have married Esther Plat 13 Feb 1814 at Leigh.  There are no Leigh baptisms for James and Esther.

1788 - 1863 Ann Mather 74 74
In 1810, Ann had an illegitimate child William Mather

In 1841, Ann Mather (50), was a Silk Weaver at Bag Lane, Atherton with apparent lodgers, Joseph WIld (14), and Betty and Lydia Toppings (20 & 3).

In 1851, Ann Mather, Silk Weaver, was at Bag Lane, Atherton, 62 and unmarried with three lodgers.

In 1861, Ann Mather (75), formerly a Silk Weaver, was with her son William at Factory Street, Atherton.

In 1863, Ann Mather, Spinster of Atherton, died aged 76
1843 - <1901 Edward Mather 58 58 Edward was born Dukinfield, Cheshire, the son of John and Ellen Mather

In 1861, Edward (17, Coal Drawer) was with parents John and Ellen at Atherton. His father was a provision dealer.
1818 - 1878 John Waillis 60 60 In 1841, John Wilis (20) a brickmaker was living with Daniel Willis (60) a Cotton Weaver on Swan Lane, East Bolton.

8 Oct 1843, John Wallis (or Willis), weaver, son of John Wallis a bricklayer married Jane Mather of Rumworth, daughter of John Mather, a weaver.

In 1851, John and Jane (31 & 32), living in Rumworth.  John was a labourer for a Brick Maker.

In 1861, John and Jane (41 & 42), living in Western Bolton.  John was a Brick Maker.

In 1871, John and Jane Willis (52 & 53) were at 43 High Street, East Bolton.  John was a Retired Brick Maker.

John died Nov 1878, aged 60.
1823 Jane Mather The Jane Mather, daughter of John, a weaver that married John Willis from Rumworth at Deane 8 Oct 1843 was born Bolton about 1819, so may not be this Jane.

In 1841, aged 17, living with mother "Mary Lee" and Richard Lee and Siblings at Alfred Street, Tyldesley
1828 John Mather John aged 13, living with his mother "Mary Lee" and Richard Lee and siblings at Alfred Street, Tyldesley

In 1861, John (33, Wid) is working for his younger brother Richard, a provision dealer.
1796 Richard Lee In 1841, Richard and Mary Lee (40 & 50) were with Betty, Jane, Thomas, Ellen, Ann, John and Richard Mather.  They also had Mary and Ellen Lee (9 & 7) at Alfred Street, Tyldesley. 1834 Ellen Lee Martha Heywood 1832 Mary Lee In 1851, Mary Lee (18), Ellen (16) and Richared (54) were at Tyldesley. 1819 Jane Mather It's not clear who Jane was, exept she is the daughter of John Mather a weaver, and was born in Bolton about 1819.  She probably had a close brother John who was a marriage witness.  Jane may be one of the un-baptised Mather from Egerton.  She may be the daughter of John Mather and Ann Thompson, born 1818.

8 Oct 1843, John Wallis, weaver, son of John Wallis a bricklayer married Jane Mather of Rumworth, daughter of John Mather.

In 1851, John and Jane were 31 & 32, living at Rumworth.
D. <1851 Thomas Dixon 1847 Ellen Dixon 1790 - 1831 John Mather 40 40 John, a weaver from Atherton had all the children baptised at Chowbent.  He was buried there in 1831, aged 39.  The closest match is John son of Samuel and Ellen, born Atherton in Nov 1790.

There are two sons of Mary Mather, Robert and John, born 1814 and 1817 with no father named.  These are likely to be the children of John and Mary.

John may have married Mary Jones 16-Jul-1815 at Farnworth, or Mary Harrison 12 Nov 1820. at Leigh (or both).  If it was Harrison, then he married her 12-Nov-1820, 3 days after she gave birth to Elizabeth, but in time to be named on the baptism.

John and Mary had all the children baptised at Chowbent.  The two early children, Robert and John are buriied there, and John joined them in 1831, aged 39.
1821 - 1896 John Tyldesley 75 75 1819 - 1859 Betty Mather 39 39 This cannot be the Betty Mather, daughter of John & Mary of Atherton, as she was still with her Mother in 1841.

This is Betty, daughter of Charles and Mary Mather of Lowton, baptised at St. Luke.  Charles is a weaver.

Betty must have married very young in 1935 if she was on 20 in 1841, and Roger 28.  She was only 15 years.

In 1841, Roger and Betty (27 & 21) were at Lowton. Roger was a silk weaver.

In 1851, Roger and Betty Hart (37 & 31), both born at Lowton, were at Goldborne, Lancashire.

Betty died at Lowton in Mar 1859, aged 39.  They had no children (although Charles had a Brother William who married Mary Mather and they had several children at Lowton).
1799 - 1853 Joseph Harden 54 54 In 1839, Joseph Harden, Widower, crofter, son of Joseph Harden, a weaver, married Elizabeth Mather, widow, daughter of Robert France, collier at St Peter Bolton.  Both were living at Astley Bridge.

In 1841, Joseph and Elizabeth (40 & 45) were crofters at Stoney Brow, Tottington Lower End.  With them were Elizabeth's three children; Jane, John and James Mather  (28, 20 & 14)

In 1851, Joseph and Betty (49 & 60) were still crofters at Stone Brow, Tottington.  The children had left.

Joseph died at Tottington in 1853, aged 54.
1791 - 1874 Elizabeth (Betty) France 83 83 Elizabeth was the daughter of Robert France and Jane (Jenny) Stockley of Atherton, Leigh. Elizabeth had an older brother John who imigrated to the USA and a sister Ann.

On 31 Oct 1813, Betty France married John Mather (weaver) at Leigh.

On 11 Aug 1839, Joseph Harden, Widower, crofter, son of Joseph Harden, a weaver, married Elizabeth Mather, widow, daughter of Robert France, collier at St Peter Bolton.  Both were living at Astley Bridge.

In 1861, Betty "Harding" was with her son at Club Row, Tottington Lower End.

In 1841, Joseph and Elizabeth Harden (40 & 45) were crofters at Stoney Brow, Tottington Lower End.  With them were Elizabeth's three children; Jane, John and James Mather  (28, 20 & 14)

In 1871, "Betty "Hardy" (70), Mother and House Keeper was with John and Ellen and their adopted child Mary Shaw (4).

She seems to have taken the name Hardy (as in 1871) as buried by that name at Bury in 1874, aged 83.
1781 - 1835 John Mather 54 54 In 1813, John Mather married Elizabeth, daughter of Robert France and Jane France.  They already had a daughter Jane, born the year before.

John was a weaver when he married Elizabeth, but after that, an Engineer (Engine Man) at Atherton.  His daughter was in Sharples when she died in 1838 and was buried at Leigh.  It is assumed John was also buried there.  If so, he died 1835, aged 54, born about 1781 and may have been married before he married Elizabeth.

Dec 1835, died aged 54 in Little Bolton and buried at Leigh.
1821 John Mather In 1841, John was a crofter at Tottington.

31 Dec 1848, John Mather, Crofter of Tottington and son of John Mather an Engineer married Ellen Barnes.

In 1851, John (from Westleigh) and Ellen (30 & 27) were lodgers with William and Ann Howarth at Tottington Lower End.

In 1861, John and Ellen (40 & 37) were at Club Row, Tottington Lower End with his mother Betty Harding (69)

John became a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was re-baptised 4 July 1841 at Tottington.

In Apr 1871, John and Ellen Mather (50 & 47) were at Dobbs Lane Head, Tottington with their adopted daughter Mary Shaw (aged 4).

18 Oct 1871, John Emigrated (to the USA? - tbc), was noted on LDS baptism record.  If he did go away, he came back!

In 1881, John and Ellen (60 & 57) are at 4 Spring View, Little Lever with their adopted daughter Mary Shaw (14).
1826 - 1848 James Mather 22 22 1812 Jane Mather Jane was baptised Jane France in 1812, a bastard child.  Her mother Elizabeth married John Mather, a weaver the following year.

Jane was 28 in 1841, living at Tottington with her mother Elizabeth (and step-father Joseph Harden).  She was gone by 1851, probably married (as no matching death).

The only marriage for Jane, daughter of John Mather is at Deane in 1843.  8 Oct 1843, Jane Mather, daughter of John Mather, a weaver, married John (weaver) son of John Wallis (brick maker), both of Rumworth.  This Jane was 32 in 1851 so probably it isnt her.
~1825 Ellen Barnes 1867 Mary Shaw In 1871, Mary Shaw, aged 4, was recorded as an adopted child of John and Ellen Mather, living at Dobbs Lane Head, Torrington Lower End. 1815 - 1816 John Mather 1 1 1752 - 1831 Nathan Mather 79 79 Nathan married Betty Green in 1781 and they lived at WestLeigh.  They had several children, bul all appart from John died as infants.

Betty died about 1790 (tbc) and Nathan remarried Jane in 1793.  They continued to live at WestLeigh until after 1807 and then moved to Tyldsley, where Thomas was born in 1807.

In 1831, Nathan died at the Penington Workhouse.
1759 - 1793 Betty Green 34 34 In 1781, Betty Green married Nathan Mather

Betty must have died about 1792, as in Dec 1793, Nathan married Jane Birchenhead.  There is a death in 1789 for Betty Mather daughter of Mary Merredith of Bedfrod, Leigh.  Its unlikely this is Nathan's wife.  Nathan Mather of Westleigh had a still-born birth 11 Dec 1791, so his wife was still alive then.
1784 - 1785 Abraham Mather 10m 10m 1789 - 1789 Peggy Mather 7m 7m 1759 - 1821 Jane (Jenny) Birchenhead 62 62 Jane or Jenny Birchenhead (or more likely Birkenhead).  She was a widower when she married Nathan ()a Widow) in 1793. 1794 - 1868 Sarah Mather 74 74 Sarah did not marry John Gregory 1822 in Leigh.  That Sarah Mather was already a widow, so cant be this Sarah Mather.  It is more likely Sarah a spinster married Thomas Hough a widower in 1825.

In 1841, Sarah (50) and her brother Matthew (45) and his wife Jane and family were at Cheapside, Hyde, Stockport.

In 1851, Saraha Mather, 60, unmarried, born Westleigh, was a Washerwoman in Stockport with William and Mary Lomax.
1796 Betty Mather Betty probably married married Peter Roughley in 1822 or John Rigby in 1834 (both at Leigh). 1841 census confirms it was John Rigby. 1798 - 1846 Matthew Mather 48 48 In 1841, Sarah (50) and her brother Matthew (45) and his wife Jane (40) and family were at Cheapside, Hyde, Stockport.  Sarah and Matthew had Jane (15), Mary (15), William (14), Thomas (9), Matthey (6), Alice (3) and Eliza (1).

By 1851, Matthew had died and Jane (48, head) was at 18 Bowker Street, Hyde with Jane (26), Thomas (19), Matthew (14), Alice (12), Eliza (10), and John (8).
1804 - 1807 Abraham Mather 3 3 1807 Thomas Mather In 1851, Thomas (born Leigh) and Catherine (41 & 40) were at Bottom Croft, Wigan.  Thay had only just married in 1850.  Thomas was a widow, so must have been married before.

Thomas may have married Margaret Leigh in Pemberrton on 18 Oct 1841.  His father was Nathan Mather a miner, so possibly another family.  The 1836 marriage to Margaret Shelmerdine in Leigh seems more likely, although fathers were not recorded at this time.
1811 Catherine Hill 1826 - 1905 Mary Ann Mooney 79 79 In 1851, Mary Ann Mooney (15, niece, born Liverpool) was with Thomas and Catherine in Wigan. Margaret Leigh 1802 - 1806 Mary Mather 3 3 1803 - >1861 Jane Taylor 58 58 Jane married Matthew Mather in 1819 at Leigh, Lancashire

By 1851, Matthew had died and Jane (48, head) was at 18 Bowker Street, Hyde with Jane (26), Thomas (19), Matthew (14), Alice (12), Eliza (10), and John (8).

In 1861, Jane was Head (61) with Jane (40), Matthew (27),  Eliza (21) and John (19) as well as 3 grandchildren.
1805 John Rigby The John Rigby that married Margaret Gaskell in 1822 was a victuller and later publican at Pennington.  They had children baptised between 1823 and 1840.

1790 - 1790 James Mather 1827 William Mather 1832 Thomas Mather 1835 Matthew Mather 1838 Alice Mather 1840 Eliza Mather 1824 May Mather 1822 Jane Mather 1843 - 1905 John Mather 62 62 ~1800 Peter Roughley ~1800 Betty Mather In 1841, Betty Rigley (40) was with assumede son John Rigley (18) and daughter Ann (16). 1828 John Rigby 1801 - 1875 Margaret Gaskel 74 74 1809 Betty Mather In 1841, Betty Rigby (40) was with her two step-children John and Ann Rigby (18 & 16) at Castle Street (the main street), Tyldersley.

In 1851, John and Betty Rigby (46 & 39) and their daughter Alice (4) and step-daughter Ann (21) were with Betty's mother Alice (70) at Vicarage Nook, Westleigh.
1781 - 1848 Henry Mather 67 67 Note: There is another Henry Mather of Leigh who married Betty Brown in 1799. She died at Atherton in July 1805 and then Henry Mather widower married Charlotte Sidlow in August. That Henry was buried at Atherton in 1832.

In 1841, Henry and Alice (both 60) were at Lowton with Henry & Mary (both 20) and Hannah (10).  Also Present were John and Betty Rigley (both 30).
1781 - 1854 Alice Boardman 73 73 3 Jan 1809 Alice Boardman married Henry Mather.

In 1841, Henry and Alice (both 60) were at Lowton with Henry & Mary (both 20) and Hannah (10).  Also Present were John and Betty Rigley (both 30).

In 1851, Alice (70, Wid, Head) was at Vicarage Nook, Westleigh with her son Henry (31), married daughter Betty (39) and extended family.
1820 - 1877 Henry Mather 57 57 In 1841, Henry Mather was a Silk Weaver, possibly married to Mary (both 20) living with Henry's parents.
NOTE: Mary Mather was listed after Henry, wheras his sister Mary was younger. However, there is no marriage.  This is not the Henry Mather from Harwood, bap.1819.
1816 Mary Mather Daughter-in-law of Alice Mather, so possibly Henry's wife. 1831 Hannah Mather In 1841, Hannah was 10 with parents and family

In 1852, Hannah may have married Richard Leigh (Civil marriage). However, there are no census records to support.
1846 Alice Rigby In 1861, Alice Rigby married John Bromiley 1841 Mary Ann Rigby Mary 1826 Ann Mather Missing in 1841

In 1851, Ann is Alice's dauhghter (not Henry's wife), aged 25.

In 1851, Ann (21), lived with her mother and grandmother Alice at Vicarage Nook, Westleigh
