NOTE: There is another older John Mather from Tyldesley, son of Jeffery, who married Alice Knnton at Manchester in 1836.

Things happened, and John and Betty had to quickly get married on 19 June 1853.  Their daughter Catherine E Mather was born the same year.

In 1861 John and Betty Mather (35 & 25) with Catherine (8), Edward (6), Mary (3) and Elizabeth (8mo) at Rumworth (births registered at Little Hulton)

John probably died in 1869 (Deane)
1868 Mary Elizabeth Morris 1905 Fred Mather 1882 - ~1916 James Mather 34 34 James was killed in Action during WW1 1883 - 1937 Ada Wood 54 54 Ada had a sister Rachel, aged 24 in 1911 1868 James Mather 1907 Norman Mather A baptism for Thomas was recorded in the parish records.  However the birth was registered as Norman.  Norman was 3 years old in 1911 (no Thomas). 1889 Clara Mather 1892 Elizabeth Mather 1895 James Edward Mather 1900 Herbert Mather 1801 Henry Mather Henry, son of William Mather married Margaret Holden in 1838.  Census records show Henry born about 1801.

NOTE: This is the only other Mather Marriage at Deane (as well as John Mather and Ellen Buckley) between 1837-1840, although several in 1841 and later.
1804 - 1871 Margaret Holden 66 66 Margaret's father was William Holden 1828 Richard Holden Richard married Betty D. ~1838 <male> Holden 1782 - 1813 Samuel Mather 31 31 Samuel was baptised at Peel by Bolton, the son of William and Mary (Green).

The 1813 death record is for Samuel son of William Mather of Worsley, aged 31 years.  Had he gone back to his father?  Alice gave birth to Ellin in 1813 and then had an illegitimate child Alice in 1915.  It seems the marriage had broken down.
1806 William Mather William second son of William Mather of Wallgate, Spinner 1808 - 1810 Benjamin Mather 2 2 Benjamin was William Mather's first (but should be third) son.  However, mother is shown as Betty Holme, so perhaps this is another family. 1781 Sarah Mather 1778 Joseph Mather Son of William Mather of Tyldesley 1775 Betty Mather Betty Mather, aged 23 married John Hulme in Eccles in 1798.

There is another Betty Mather (aged 20) marrying John March (aged 22) in Nov 1799.  This must be another, 4 years younger!
1753 - 1827 William Mather 74 74 William's mother may have been Betty.  There is a Betty Mather (1737-1821) buried at St Bartholomew (Westhoughton).

William Mather (weaver) and Alice Aldercroft, "both of Astley" were married 26 May 1774.  Betty and Joseph were both from Astley Village.

Siblings of William probabry include John, Ellis, Otho and Micall, all who had children baptised at St Stephen's, Astley between 1777 and 1836.
1762 - 1838 Mary Green 76 76 On daughter Ann's baptism, Mary Kay was given as the mother amd then "Kay" crossed out and shown as Mather. 1790 - 1842 Geffrey (Jeffery) Mather 52 52 Baptised Geoffrey  1788 - 1862 John Mather 74 74 John's first marriage was to Betty Woodward.  Brother Geoffery was witness.  Betty died in 1835 and was buried at Westhoughton (the only possible burial for a spouse of John).

John and Betty had four (or more) children.  First two were baptised at Westhoughton (1814-16), and then Mary and Betty at Winwick (1819-22).

John (a widower) married Isaballe Harrington in 1839.  In 1841 John and Isabella were at Wingates, West Houghton.  John was a Shop Keeper.

John's daughter Betty was an Inn keeper in Lord Street, Southworth with Croft. John (74) was with them in 1851

in 1861, they were at the Beer House (probably the Windmill where daughter Ann was in 1865) in Westhoughton.  John (72) was a beer seller.
1785 Alice Mather Aiice probably Married James Toping, 1803 at Deane 1792 Ann Mather 1795 - 1806 Joseph Mather 11 11 1793 Isabella Harrington 1796 - 1834 Catherine Gregory 38 38 1825 - 1895 Jane (Ann) Smith 70 70 Anne when Catherine baptised and on 1851 census, but married Jane Smith in 1847, and Jane on all later records.

25 Apr 1847, Jane Smith, daughter of Thomas Smith a joiner, married Joseph Mather at Deane Parish Church.
1852 Thomas Mather 1864 Jeffrey Mather 1821 Joseph Mather Joseph married Jane in April 1847 and yet when Catherine was baptised the parents were Joseph and Anne.  Joseph also recorded his wife Anne in 1851, with both daughters Catherine (4) and Alice (1) present.

It appears Anne and Jane are the same person, same age, silk weaver.  Probably the name have been mis-read as Jane and Anne appear very similar on these records.  All the childrens birth records show the mother's maiden name as SMITH.
1847 Catherine Mather 1849 - 1853 Alice Mather 3 3 1854 Ann Mather This is the second Ann.  Another Ann was born in 1850 than died (TBC) 1856 Alice Mather 1859 Ellen Mather 1861 Mary Jane Mather 1791 - 1835 Betty Woodward 44 44 John was probably married before he married Isalella late in life.  brother Jeffery married at Deane, so would expect the same for John. Also, Betty Mather was buried at Westhoughton in 1835, just before John remarried Oct 1839.  This all points towards the marriage of John and Betty Woodward. 1818 - 1818 Ellen Mather 1m 1m 1824 Ellen Mather Ellen, a minor, married William Elliot, also a minor and a husbandman on 27 March 1843. 1824 - 1895 Alice Mather 71 71 In 1851, Alice (aged 27) was lodging with her brother William and Mary Mather (32 & 30) at Brimsup Hall, Westhoughton.  She had her daughter Catherine (6) with her.

Alice and Simon (47,53) and step-daughter Catherine (27) were silk wevers in 1871. Grand-son and grand-daughter Moses (7) and Mary (4) were also there.
1827 Ann Mather Ann married Richard Woodward 1833 Mary Mather <unknown> 1844 - 1937 Catherine Mather 93 93 Catheine never married

In 1861, Catherine was the step-daughter of Simon Ratcliffe, after he had married Alice Mather in 1857.

It seems that Catherine was the first to retire to Blackpool, with other family following soon after.
<unknown> 1863 - 1949 Moses Mather 85 85 Moses Mather was illegitimate.  No father was named on the birth index.

In 1871, Moses was 7, living with his grandparents Simon and Alice Radcliffe (53 & 47).

In 1881, Moses Radcliffe (18), Son (probably of Catherine Radcliffe, unmarried, 36) was a Coal Miner at 1 Lee Fold, Westhoughton. Simon and Alice Radcliffe (63 & 57) were head of household.

In 1891, Moses, a Coal Miner, and Ann (27 & 26) were at 43 Manchester Road, Westhoughton with James, Mary E and Joseph (4, 2 & 2mo)

Moses became an indurance agent in later life.  He and wife Ann both died in Blackpool.

Moses names one of his sons William Adamson Mather, so confirming this civil marriage to Ann Adamson in 1885 (when he was 22).
1865 - 1918 Ann Adamson 53 53 1817 - 1891 Simeon Ratcliffe 74 74 1819 - >1891 William Mather 72 72 in 1841 William (21) and Edward Mather (10) were with William and Ann Gregory (farmer, both 60) at West Houghton.

In 1851, William and Marg (32 & 30) were at Part of Brinsop  Hall, Westhoughton with Catherine (6), John (3), Alice (2) and his sister Alice (27) and her daughter Catherine (6).

In 1861, William, a banksman, was still at Brinsop Hall with wife Margaret and 7 children.

In 1871, William and MArgaret (50 & 58) were still at Brinsop  with their children
1845 Catherine Mather In 1866, Catherine Married James Green.  They continued to liver at Westhoughton 1847 John Mather 1848 Edward Mather 1823 - >1911 Margaret Smith 88 88 Margaret (indexed as Mary in 1851 by is Marg) was from Lostock, daughter of William Smith a Weaver.. 1853 Ann Mather In 1881, Ann was 27, a Silk Weaver, and unmarried 1856 William Mather 1858 Margaret Mather Margared married a Higham.  She and here mother were togethin at 592 Chorley Road Westhaughton in 1911.  Brother Jeffery completed the 1911 census, although not on it. 1861 Jeffrey (Geoffrey) Mather 1858 Mary Ratcliffe Mary, daughter (aged 3) in 1861 1867 Mary Mather 1808 - 1830 Moses Mather 21 21 There was another Moses Mather born 1804, son of James and Alice of Middleton 1804 Margaret Mather Like her siblings, Margaret probably was born and died in Westhaughton.  However there is a mariage at Leigh to John Green which could be her if Margaret was born in Accrington. 1780 - 1824 Edward Mather 44 44 Edward and Ruth are (the only) two unaccounted burials at Westhoughton.  William is the only known possible father of Edward, but no Baptism to prove it.  However, there is for William and Alice, and it seems William was married before he married Mary Green, which may explain the big age gap between William and Mary.  Edward was the son of William and Alice of Westhoughton, baptised 1782

The 1841 census still has Ruth (60) and family, Farmer
1779 - 1846 Ruth Gregory 67 67 Ruth's parents were John and Margaret Gergory.

Ruth (60) was at Rogers Farm, Westhoughton in 1841 with various Mather family.
1822 - 1846 Edward Mather 23 23 Edward died young, just a few months after his mother, aged 23.  There is another Edward from Westhoughton born 1830 who survived. 1819 - 1866 Ruth Mather 47 47 1804 - 1878 Martha Mather 74 74 Martha, with her three children Allan, Betty and Ellen were living on Rogers Farm (Westhoughton) with Ruth in 1841. 1833 Betty Mather Betty did not marry, but had three children by 1861: Ellen (9), Ruth (7) and James (1).  She was living at School Hill, Wingate, Westhoughton, and neighbour to Henry and Margaret Mather  (her great aunt and uncle). 1840 Ellen Mather 1829 Allan Mather ~1753 - 1781 Alice Aldcroft 28 28 William Mather (weaver) and Alice Aldercroft, "both of Astley" were married 26 May 1774 1813 James Doodson ~1806 William Turner 21 Apr 1840, William Turner, son of Isaac married Maretha Mather, dau of Edward at Wigan.  Where are several children born before 1840, so this may be the worng marriage.

In 1861, William and Martha (44 & 57) are farmers with son Isaac (19, unmarried) at Rogers Farm
1830 - 1896 Edward Mather 66 66 There are four Edward Mather families at Atherton:  Edward Mather and HOLLAND (births 1851-60 at Ashton), OWEN (births 1866-88); Betsy MORRIS (married 1863, births 1863-84) and Betty ABBOTT (Married 1852, births 1870-85).

This Edward appears to have had children by several mothers, without marrying any of them  Edward and Besty Morris did marry, and appears to be 14 years younger.  Its possible Edward lead a double life with two families.

1841 - Edward (11) with assumed brother William (21) at William and Ann Gregory's farm (Brinsup Hall), Westhoughton.

1851 - In service as an Ag Labourer for Latham family, at Chadwicks, Lostock. By 1861 Edward (31) is farming 10.5 acres at Ashes Farm, Westhoughton with wife Betty (28).

1861 Edward and Betty (31 & 26) are still at Ashes farm, Westhoughton, farming 10.5 acres.  They have children John and Martha (3 & 1).

In 1871, Edward (41) is with Betty (39) with John (13), Martha (11), James (3) and child Samuel (9 mo).  The Birth records shows James's mother OWEN and Samuel's mother is ABBOTT.

In 1881, Edward and Betsy (50 & 48) were at 289 Rag Lane, Atherton with sons James and Samuel (13 & 10, sons of ABBOTT) and married daughter Martha Yates. This must be the Edward who partnered HOLLAND and OWEN.

If Edward's wife is Betty Abbot, married at Blackrod in 1852 then his father is Thomas.
1833 - 1904 Elizabeth (Betty) Holland 71 71 1857 John Mather 1860 Martha Holland 1854 Peter Yates 1870 Samuel Mather 1865 William Mather Halliwell births of MATHER+CALDWELL are the Robert & Jane Mather family

Granddaughter of Daniel and Sarah Armitage and James and Elizabeth (Betsy) Banks (nee GERMAN or LAWTON).

Thought to ne nicknamed Ethel, but Nellie has a close sister Ethel, so this is very unlikely.
1851 - 1859 Jeffery (Geoffrey) Mather 8 8 There are records for the birth and death of G/Jeffery and a gap in the births, but no bapitism to confirm.  However after Jeffert died, another was baptised, so he must be of this family. ~1804 John Green Luke Southern 1854 Ellen Mather 1854 Ruth Mather 1861 James Mather 1815 - 1875 Richard Mather 59 59 Richard did not re-marry Jane Ingram in 1848 at Wigan. That was Richard son of William.  He boarding in Wigan in in 1871 and died there 1875. 1812 - 1852 Mary Leigh 40 40 Birth records for Edward, Mary and Ruth show mothers maiden name as Leigh 1839 - 1839 Edward Mather 1840 - 1844 Mary Mather 4 4 1844 - 1931 Ruth Mather 87 87 Ruth and Richard married at Deane and lived in Wigan. They had a son Richard. 1837 Ann Mather 1836 John Mather John moved to 152 Brook St, Birkenhead in 1861.

He left Birkenhead about 1874 after Elizabeth was born and moved to Aspull, Lancashire.

After John, their last child the family movd back to Westhoughton, where daughter Maria Ellen Mather married William Morris in 1888.
1837 Elizabeth Ransden 1861 Richard Mather 1817 - 1833 Elizabeth (Betty) Mather 16 16 Baptised Betty, but Buried as Elizabeth 1813 - 1827 Alice Mather 14 14 1803 - 1819 Ruth Mather 16 16 1853 Ann Jane Mather 1844 - 1915 Richard Meadows 71 71 1806 - 1824 John Mather 18 18 1809 - 1826 Ellen Mather 17 17 1842 Isaac Turner 1816 - 1821 Joseph Mather 5 5 Cant be sure who Joseph was, who was buried at Westhoughton, but probably son of Jeffery, as another Jospeh was baptised soon after this Joseph died, aged 5. 1814 - 1865 Ann Mather 51 51 Ann (daughter of John) married Thomas Bromilow 8 Sep 1839.

Ann and Thomas had the Windmill Beer House, Chorley Road, Westhoughton, Dean (when she died in 1865).
1819 Mary Mather 1822 Betty Mather 1816 Thomas Bromilow 1886 - 1957 James Mather 71 71 1888 Mary Ellen Mather 1891 Joseph Mather 1894 - 1967 Catherine Mather 73 73 1899 Edward Mather 1902 John Mather 1905 Alice Mather 1855 Joseph Mather 1868 Samuel Mather 1865 Maria Ellen Mather 1873 Elizabeth Mather 1875 Edward Mather 1877 Henry Mather 1879 Sarah A Mather 1864 Mary Mather 1880 Ruth Mather 1885 John Mather 1865 William Morris 1775 John Hulme 1818 Peter Unsworth Peter was an Inn Keeper 1843 - <1901 Edward Mather 58 58 Edward was born Dukinfield, Cheshire, the son of John and Ellen Mather

In 1861, Edward (17, Coal Drawer) was with parents John and Ellen at Atherton. His father was a provision dealer.
1824 William Elliott William Elliot on marriage but Elliott elsewhere

In 1843, William Eliott a husbandman was the son of William Elliot a weaver when he married Ellen Mather.  Both were under 21 and from Westhoughton.

In 1845, the family may have been living in Manchster at the time Elizabeth was born.  After that they moved to Little Bolton.

In 1851, William and Ellen (both 28) were at 34 Nelson Street, Little Bolton with Henry (7), Elizabeth (6), Catherine (5), William (3) and Alice (1).

In 1861, William and Ellen (40 & 39) were at 14 Brick Field, Halliwell with Elizabeth (16), Catherine (15), William (13),  Alice (11), Mary Ann  (9), and Frederick (5).
1786 - 1864 Mary Mather 78 78 In 1841, Adam and Mary (both 55) were farmers at Leigh Common, Westhoughton with Mary (20) and Adam (17), both silk weavers. 1785 - 1867 Adam Hodkinson 81 81 In 1841, Adam and Mary (both 55) were farmers at Leigh Common, Westhoughton with Mary (20) and Adam (17), both silk weavers. 1824 Adam Hodkinson 1818 - 1900 Mary Hodkinson 82 82 George and Mary moved to West Derby, Liverpool. DNA match to jspencera and nshardman
1830 George Holme 1810 Catherine Hodkinson 1826 Margaret Hodkinson Margaret was missing in 1841 1815 Ann Hodkinson 1765 - ~1796 Robert Mather 31 31 Robert's mother was Mary, and his father was Thomas, who died March 1765 at "Penington" Leigh, just before Robert was born.

Robert & Jinney (or Jenny) could sign their names and were married by licence, so both were well educated.

Robert may have died about 1795.  There is no death record for Westhoughton or Deane.  However, Jane registered the birth of Richard in 1796, and the father was not named, (so may be deceased).
1760 Jane (Jenny) Sale All 5 baprism records show Jane.  Jenny Sale married Robert 29 May 1785 at Deane by licence.

Jinney (when baptised) or Jenny (when married) or or Jane (on childrens baptisms)
1787 Betty Mather In 1851, Betty Mather, unmarrried, aged 64 was at the Turton Workhouse. (This may be the daughter of RIchard and Betty from Bolton).

On 22 June 1823, Betty may have married Joseph Stafford at Deane. Joseph was a Crofter.
