However, another "Biographical Information" reference with a matching date of birth has:

This second reference shows Hugo Adalbert Dittmer was well educated, which is consistent with him having a sucessful career as a shipping merchant.  However, both Strasbourg (on the SW border with France) and Halle, in East Germany near Leipzig are a long way from Hamburg (in the North), where the 1871 UK census had his birthplace.
