Ruth was born in 1834 in Little Bolton.1  Ruth's father was James Rawsthorn and her mother was Mary (Mariann) Ann Mather. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, William, William, Mary and Mary.  She was the youngest of the six children. She had a half-sister named Ellen.
