Mary's father was James Crompton and her mother was Margaret Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were Richard Mather and Ann Marsden. She had six brothers and a sister, named James, Miles, Ellias, Richard, Benjamin, Daniel and Ann.  She was the oldest of the eight children.  She died in 1848 in Halliwell.¹
