James was born in December 1881 in Bolton.1  James' father was John Thomas Mather and his mother was Hannah Joynson.  His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Elizabeth (Betsy) Broom. He had three brothers and a sister, named Charles, Ernest, Fred and Mary.  He was the oldest of the five known children.
