Desmond's father was Eric Arthur Brereton and his mother was Forothy Kathleen Bowden. His paternal grandparents were Arthur Abraham Brereton and Harriett Hartley. He had a brother and a sister, named Roy and Joan. He was the second oldest of the three children.
