Jewetts of America - Pliny Hayes

A Record of Edward Jewett, of Bradford, West Riding of Yorkshire, England, and of his two emigrant sons, Deacon Maximilian and Joseph Jewett, Settlers of Rowley, Massachusetts, in 1639 also of Abraham and John Jewett, Early Settlers of Rowley, and of the Jewetts who have settled in the United States since the year 1800.
3396 DR.PLINY HAYES (Lucretia1xx9, Joseph780, Nathan2xx, Joseph109, Joseph22, Joseph 4, Edward1), was born in Granby, Conn., Dec. 5, 1788. He removed to western New York in 1798 and was educated at the Canandaigua Academy. He was a teacher and from 1807 to 1812 a journeyman printer in New York, Philadelphia, and Boston. During the War of 1812 he was Captain's Clerk and Acting Surgeon's Mate of the United States Ship "Hornet" in her cruise of 1812-13 with the "Constitution," and was in the action of the "Hornet" and "Peacock." He received the degree of M. D. from Harvard College in 1815, and practiced in Boston from 1815 to 1817, when he settled in Canandaigua, N. Y. He was a member of several medical, musical, and scientific societies in Boston and Canandaigua; was a lecturer and author, and in 1825 founder of a medical school at Auburn, later of Geneva, and which is now Hobart College. Dr. Hayes was builder of the first railway in New York, at Canandaigua, in 1827. He married in Canandaigua, Dec. 19, 1822, Eliza Stout Wells, daughter of Dr. Richard and Miriam (Hayden) Wells. She was born in Conway, Mass., Feb. 23, 1800, and died in Canandaigua, Nov. __, 1831. He died in New York city July 28, 1831.
