Martha was born in 1847.  Martha's father was John A. Alcorn and her mother was Sarah Ann Asbell.  Her maternal grandparents were Joseph Asbell and Malinda Bicknell.  She was the fifth of eight children.  She had three brothers and four sisters, named Albert Gilbert, Sanford, John R., Mary Ann, Lousinda Lurelda, Jemima and Sarah Frances.
