  • Edward Greenman
    Note: Peter Greenman has the following information on Edward in his 'The Greenman Family in America:' Edward was Deputy to the General Assembly for Kingston, RI in 1700, 1704, 1705, 1709, and 1710. He was speaker of the House of Deputies in 1704. He was a member of the Hopkinton (RI) Seventh Day Baptist Church. The following is from 'Early Colonial Money and Its Counterfeiting 1647-1726.' On 5 Apr. 1708, for 215 pounds, he bought 250 acres of land from Samuel and Isaac Worden and their wives Hopestill and Rebecca. On 11 Feb. 1709, he and his wife Margaret sold George Hazard 120 acres of land. He deposed to land on 31 Mar. 1719, calling himself fifty-six years old, or thereabouts (Austin). At a General Court of Trials held at Newport the last Tuesday in March 1713, Capt. Edward Greenman, of Kingston, brought suit in an action of trespass and damage for 100 pounds against Edward Mott. Verdict for the defendant (General Court of Trials, Newport, Book 1, p. 200). Capt. Edward Greenman was the first borrower in the Town of Kingston of the bills of credit issued by the 1715 bank. Capt. Edward Greenman, together with his two sons Edward and Judge Silas Greenman, had all been in jail some time on the charge of counterfeiting, when at a General Court of Trials and General Gaol Delivery, held at Newport 26 Nov. 1718, they all pleaded guilty. Capt. Edward Greenman (about 55 years old at the time) was sentenced to stand in the pillory and have his ears cropt, or pay a fine of 600 pounds, post a bond of 700 pounds (to pay double damage), and pay costs of prosecution, condemnation, etc. He paid the fine. His son Edward Greenman, Jr., (about 24 years old at the time) paid a fine of 300 pounds and posted a bond of 400 pounds. His son Judge Silas Greenman (about 28 years old at the time) paid a fine of 300 pounds and posted a bond of 400 pounds, a total in fines for father and two sons of 1200 pounds and bonds of 1500 pounds. Capt. Edward Greenman, of Charlestown, Kings County, yeoman, calling himself ancient, made his will 30 July 1739, proved 1 Sept. 1749, in which he bequeaths, after his wife's death, to daughter Abigail, 10s; to son Silas, 10s; to daughter Phebe Whiting, 10s; to son Edward all the rest of the estate, real and personal, at death of wife and self. Son Edward sole executor. Witnesses: Jeremiah Clarke, Experience Basset and William Basset. (Charlestown Probate Records, vol. 1, p. 137.) On 7 Dec. 1769 his sons Silas, Edward and Nathan Greenman gave freedom to a negro named 'Southwick,' formerly belonging to their father, 'for good will and for 25 pounds paid by said negro.' (Austin.)
