  He was a machine turner who qualified to be a naval artificer and might have gone to sea during World War 1 but he had the option of a factory based job (as a gun borer) and Lilian persuaded him to do that because she thought it was safer. Unfortunately he suffered badly from asthma which was made much worse by inhaling metal dust.
  
  He was a talented pianist with a beautiful bass singing voice. He collapsed suddenly while playing piano at a party and died shortly afterwards.
