Earl's father was Leonard John Rayner and his mother was Coreen Ida Rayner (nee: Martin).  His paternal grandparents were Mr George Laidlaw Rayner and Elizabeth Rayner nee (Meredith).  He is the fourth of six children.  He has three brothers and two sisters, named Robert, Douglas, Stewart, Eleanor and Susan.
