Gainsborough Lodge, Leytonstone, taken from one of the lawns. Foremost in the picture is the dining room and on the left is a large conservatory (30' X 15') which was used at 'party time' for dancing. It had an artistic tiled floor.

Gainsborough Lodge was the home of Mr and Mrs JG Locks and their family for fifty years.

Two sons, Cyrill Ellis and Cliffor Maurice were born there.

Mr and Mrs JG Locks bought the house in 1900.

It consisted of 15 rooms and stood in a large garden with orchard, 2 lawns and an attractive collection of roses, shrubs, flowers and trees.

The house had a semi-basement with a large butler's pantry, scullery, kitchen and staff living room. Also int he basement was a wine cellar with 2-inch thick shelves, a pantry which was built under the ground and remained at the same temperature in winter and summer. There were also 2 coal cellars and a staff lavatory.

Upstairs was a large drawing room, large dining room, large library/billiards room, 2 lavatories and a bathroom.

3 bedrooms on the 1st floor and 5 on the top floor. One of these was fitted out as a child's nursery until the first world war.

Outside in the garden were stables in which were kept ponies which John George Locks used for transport each day.

    • Bramfield House, Cross Bush Road, Felpham, West Sussex.

In 1933, for health reasons, Mr & Mrs. J G Locks bought Bramfield House so that they could spend the summer months at Gainsborough Lodge and the winter in the milder climate of the Sussex Coast.

When Mrs Locks died in May 1945, Mr J G Locks asked his daughter and her husband to live with him. Lily and Fred then sold their house at Grimsby and Fred retired (he was the District Valuer).

When Mr J G Locks died in 1950, Lily and Fred were invited to continue to live at Bramfield House for the remainder of their lives.
