Chitra was born in 1960. Chitra's father was Mr Umesh Kumar Derhgawen and her mother was Mrs Premlata (Bachchi) Derhgawen. Her maternal grandparents were Mr Ramashraya Prasad Sinha and Mrs Saraswati Devi (Daughter). She has two brothers and a sister, named Munnu, Chunnu and Madhu. She is the second youngest of the four children.
