Comm de Cordes, No.56)  COAT-OF-ARMS: Golden ones with lion rampant, limbed, with mouths. Origins: According to Naville-Rilliet, "a Mr. Vieusseux (Jean-Louis, 1754-1817) had had engraved a seal divided in two parts: one part golden with lion with mouths, the second part rimmed in azure, or wavy serpent, on a pale, silvered and to crown it all, top third part of Coat of Arms labeled with three silver pendants."   A seal (ancient collection of J.J.Dumont at Museum of History and Art Geneva), red wax, rectangular, 19th century, Coat of Arms Vieusseux, whose tip is underlined by two crossed palms. Burnished helmet turned to the side - lambrequins  Seal of Alfred Vieusseux-Bertrand, Citizen of Geneva, 1819-1892.  A seal (collection of Archives of History of Geneva) red wax, oval 20 x 18mm in the style of XVIII Century. Oval Coat of Arms in a Lou is XV scroll bearing the Vieusseux arms. Burnished helmet turned to the right. Small lambrequins. Holding: two savages armed with clubs. The setting rests on a bracket decorated with branches. Engraved in beautiful quality. seal Vieusseux: date not known:   "The Vieusseux or Vieussieux come from Rouergue where they were ennobled by King Charles VI (1380-1422). It is at least what was stated in 17 94 to the General Jean-Louis Vieusseux.... (Rivier)   "Our ancestors were raised to the nobility by King Charles VI (1380-1422) and the proof would easily be found in the neighbourhood of St.Antonin. Our cousin (General Vieusseux) considers that it would be worth the trouble to make the journey to collect the exact details on the spot. Twenty- five years ago a Sieur de Vieusseux who was an officer in a French regiment and who certainly considered himself of the nobility and who gave him very precise details of the assurances of the illustrious knight who bore our name.... we must believe General Vieusseux." (1810).   One can draw ones own conclusions as to the veracity of the Coat-of-Arms but there is no mention of a Coat-of-Arms until the early nineteenth century , first used by Jean-Louis then by Alfred Vieusseux-Bertrand. The usage of the crest appears to have spread throughout the family - even the letterhead of the Ladies College in Melbourne uses a modified version of the "small lambrequins- with two savages with clubs."   Mention is also made by the Director of the Gabinetto Vieuseux that is hold two versions of a family crest - again the 19th century.   The first VIEUSSEUX we can trace as a direct lineal descendant.  The Tarn-et-Garonne.... one would like to write a family history as one describes the course of a river. This is unfortunately hardly ever possible; firstly because the surname is adopted somewhere along the way when t he family has already come on a longer untraceable journey and secondly be cause truly authentic sources only allow you to move with difficulty and s lowly part of the way back up river.   Thus it is with our family- the Vieusseux. Some say they were knighted by Charles VI (before l429!). This remains to be proved.   More reliable is the fact that we find Vieusseux in St Antonin in the 16th century.   "Antoine Vieusseux, husband of Marguerite Villeneuve, their son Abel"... appears in the work of J. Donat 'Les Montalbanais et le refuge in the time of Henri IV of France"; also "France Protestante" by Haag who gives ten other well known references, whilst referring to several (R.R.P.) Protestant families by that name, living in St.Antonin. Some among them a re "newly converted", that is, they abjure the Calvinist faith; others will leave to go into 'exile' with other Huguenots. We may judge the reasons for leaving more personal than religious.   The theory that they came from Rouergue (an old province) has been put forward. This is quite plausible. A surname with great similarities, VIEUSSE NS (e.g. Raymond de Vieussens - who was doctor of medecin to Melle de Montpensier and died in 1715 in Montpellier has its origin in the village of Vieussens in Rouergue.   From there to St. Antonin? - The Vieusseux were gold and silversmiths, and merchants in St. Antonin and then "MsOs" - Master goldsmiths in Albi. The "History of Silversmithing in the Languedoc" by Jean Thuile, gives information on 10 of them, adding or complementing the biographies of Charles Portal. The latter, unfortunately, ill informed on the origins of the people from Rouergue had found traces of Vieusseux at Albi from the beginning of the 16th Century. They were there until the middle of the 19th Century. Later there were some in Toulouse. François Vieusseux, the printer, was still living there in the 1820's, whilst many scattered round the globe, after the classic passage, by Pierre in 1688, via Geneva.   After four centuries it appears that the last of the family name is represented in Australia.   Fortunately for the recording of the Vieusseux history, Jean Théodore Rivier married Susette Vieusseux. (1782) from the writing of the history of the Rivier family we obtain much of the information about the Vieusseux family.
