    James Stanley Newman, professor of agriculture in Clemson college, South Carolina, was born in Orange county, Va., December II, 1836, and is a son of James and Mary (Scott) Newman, the former being a prominent agriculturist of his day. Professor Newman was reared in Orange county, Va., and was educated at the far-famed university of that State, where he spent three years. He taught school from 1858 to the spring of 1861, when he entered the service of the Confederate army as a private in the Gordonsville Grays. Two of his brothers were in the same command, and subsequently all three were transferred to the Montpelier Guards, in which a fourth brother, Wilson S. Newman, was a lieutenant. This command became Company A, Thirteenth Virginia regiment of infantry, commanded by A. P. Hill, and in this company and regiment he served until the battle of First Cold Harbor, after which he was honorably discharged on account of failing health. He then went to Georgia and resumed teaching, but in the spring of 1864 again entered the Confederate service in G. W. Smith's brigade and was again soon discharged owing to bad health. In neither case did he ask for the discharge. He participated in the battles of Winchester, Cross Keys, Port Republic and First Cold Harbor. In 1865 he turned his attention to farming in Virginia, but in 1867 returned to Georgia, where he taught and planted in Hancock county for eight years. This was followed by eight years service as editing clerk in the Georgia state department of agriculture, and in 1863 he was elected professor of agriculture and director of the experiment station at the agricultural and mechanical college at Auburn, Ala. In 1891 he accepted the position he now holds as professor of agriculture in Clemson college. In 1894 he resigned this place and returned to farming in Georgia; but in 1897 he was re-elected to the same position in Clemson college which he had formerly held and which he is now occupying. He was married in 1863 to Miss Elberta Lewis, of Macon county, Ga., and they have five children
