  • Judge Eve acquired his initial education at the Richmond Academy and afterwards at Adairsville under private instruction, then going to the University of Virginia, and after two years study in philosophy, literature and history he took up the study of law under John B. Minor and Stephen O. Southall, two of th most distinguished professors of the day. He graduated in the class of 1871 and at once returned to Augusta.  He was elected justice of the peace at the age of 21 years, in 1875 he became solicitor of the city court of Richmond County. Three years later he was appointed judge of the court and has occupied the position ever since that time.  In Business Life  In buiness life Judge Eve was indentified with many of the leading development undertakings looking toward the advancement of the city, being among the first to recognize the supremacy of The Hill as a residential section, becoming identified with concerns looking toward creating interest in the community as a residence section.  In charitable work he was unexcelled and was untiring in his work in this direction, being on the board of managers of the orphan asylum, a director in the Young Men's Library Association, and actively connected with other organizations. In church life he was regarded as a faithful and untiring worker as steward in St. John Church for a long number of years.  He was married May 16, 1876 to Miss Ida Allie Evans, the famous Confederate leader.  Hardly any man in the history of Augusta has been more highly esteemed and honored by the citizens of Augusta than Judge Eve. A demonstrative manifestation of this face was the gift of an elegant residence by a number of pominent citizens when his home was burned a few years ago.  Prominent in Politice  Judge Eve has been prominent in the polities of Georgia for a generation. His influence was known throghout the state. In Augusta and Richmond County, he proved invulnerable. Made the storm center of political fight after political fight, he has never gone down in defeat. He was often hard beyet, but the friendships accorded him were so sincere and rang so true that victory always cam to him. His strenth was in his absolute purity of character. Men who fought him determinedly at the polls, at no time uttered a whisper against him intergity as an official or his stainless record as a man. In politics he was faithful to his promises, fought in the open, fairly and squarely, intergrity and worth.  The fighting on him grew out of his county commissionship. For years he was, by virtue of his office as judge of the city court, commissioner of county roads and revenues. Many of the best citizens of the community took the postition that this dual position was inimaical to the best interests of the county. Others, equally as prominent and equally large taxpayers, believed the arrangement the most economical and most beneficial taht could be made, and they urged Judge Eve to maintain the situation as it stood.  After Judge Eve's final success in this campainging on the "dual" offices-when a legislativc delegation was chosen to sustain him in the assembly- he decided to relinquish the county commissionship and, being urged by him to do so, his friends on the house delegation effected the legislation which resulted in the formation and installation in office of the board of county commissioners as new constituted.  The Father of Goods Reads.  Under Judge Eve's administration of the county's affairs was begun the road-building here- for Richmond was the pioneer in this work, and many years back the splendid highways here were the toast, not only of Augustans, but of Georgians and the South. Visitors from the country over praised these highways and to Judge Eve was given the name as "The Father of Good Roads" in the state.  Almost all of the county institutions- the improved (practically new) courthouse; the county home, the county farm; the stockade, the reformality- came in Judge Eve's administration.  It was the belief that, after his retirement as commissioner, that Judge Eve would sit during his life, undisturbed and unchallenged on the city court bench- in view of the magniscent service he had given Richmond County.  But there came further politics for him, for others sought the judgeship. However, again the people showed for him their love, their esteem, their confidence, and he was successful.
