Place Notes
St. John's Lutheran Church (Sanner), was located in Black Township, about 2 miles northeast of Rockwood, near Wilson Creek.
The beginning of the congregation dates to 1783, when the area was still in Milford Township.
Meetings were held in a log building. The land was deeded March 26, 1814, for ten cents, to the trusties of the Lutheran / Reformed Societies. A school house and cemetery were in place prior to the planning of a 25X30 foot church building. The building was not completed as designed. A new church building was planned for 1871. Lutheran members of the planing committee were: George Humbert and Levi Sanner. Reformed members of the committee were David Wabel and Peter J. Baker. When the building was completed, neither the Lutheran nor the German Reformed minister would dedicate this union church. It stood undedicated.
It became part of the Rockwood charge in 1881.
The Lutherans erected another beautiful church and removed the old "Baker Church." It was incorporated in 1916.
