chrisminerd added this on 27 Dec 2007
R. Penn Minerd, a retired teacher of instrumental music on Long Island, died Jan. 28 at Citrus Memorial Hospital in Inverness, Fla., after a long illness. He was 81.
A Huntington resident for 40 years, Mr. Minerd was born in Philadelphia, graduated from Mansfield University in Pennsylvania and earned a master's degree in music at Penn State University. He taught instrumental music both privately and in public schools for nearly four decades before retiring in 1977 from the Lloyd Harbor School.
During his 28 years at the Lloyd Harbor School, his band played frequently at the Jones Beach band shell. In 1964, his elementary school band performed at the New York World's Fair.
Mr. Minerd served on the original board of the Huntington Symphony, forerunner of the Long Island Philharmonic. He enjoyed playing violin in the Senior Pops Orchestra after retiring. A World War II veteran, he was a member of the Patrol Craft Sailors Association and a lifetime member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Jane; two daughters, Cynthia Moringiello of Ronkonkoma and Barbara Jane Minerd of Smithtown; and a brother, Robert, of Scarsdale.
Mr. Minerd's ashes will be interred in June at Riverside Cemetery in Rochester. A memorial service will be scheduled soon.
Contributions may be sent to the Mansfield University Foundation, Mansfield, Pa. 16933.
