Man who was shot during robbery in Northeast dies of injuries
By DAFNEY TALES
Philadelphia Daily News
When Ralph Hibner visited his nephew at his Northeast apartment Wednesday night, he could not have guessed that it would be his last visit. Hibner, 50, of Kensington, was shot once in the abdomen during a robbery there.
He died of his injuries about 2 a.m. yesterday at Frankford Hospital-Torresdale, police said.
About 8 p.m. Wednesday, police said, four to five people were let into the residence at the St. Ives Apartments, on Riverside Drive near Woodhaven Road, and robbed Hibner and his relatives in the living room.
A struggle ensued between Hibner and a gunman as Hibner tried to leave the apartment. He was shot in the doorway about 8:20 p.m.
Some of the robbers "were known acquaintances" of the people who lived in the apartment, said Lt. Rick Sysol, of Northeast Detectives.
"The family didn't know why he [Hibner] was shot," said Sysol.
Police said that the robbers fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.
Hibner's nephew, the nephew's 2-year-old son and the child's mother live in the apartment, police said.
The toddler was asleep in another room during the incident, police said.
No one else was injured.
One suspect is in custody and the others are being sought, police said. *
