Rosena Adami, great dancer
By BEN FINLEY
Bucks County Courier Times
In the 1920s and 1930s, being a good dancer was very important, and Rosena Adami was a great one, her son Richard Adami of Bensalem said. As a teenager, she loved to slow dance, jitterbug and do other popular dance steps.
Those steps eventually changed to motherhood and marriage. Mrs. Adami had three children and was married to Conrad Adami for 64 years.
Rosena L. Kulp Adami died of natural causes Tuesday at the Masonic Eastern Star Home in Warminster. She was 91. She and her husband lived most of their lives in the Somerton section of Philadelphia.
When she was 17 and 18, Mrs. Adami and her twin sister Betty would go to chaperoned dances at places such as Wagner's ballroom in Philadelphia, Adami said.
"[She] and my Aunt Betty would talk about it quite often [when they were older]," her son said. "It was a nice, safe way for women to go out and meet men. That was socially how people met."
As it turned out, neither sister met her future husband at the dances. However, Conrad Adami turned out to be a good dancer anyway. He and Rosena met on his 21st birthday in North Philadelphia. They married when Mrs. Adami was 20 years old.
The couple opened a candy store in the front part of their house in the Germantown section of Philadelphia during World War II. During the day, Mrs. Adami would run the store and take care of the children.
In 1950, the family moved to Somerton off Red Lion Road, an area that was still farmland, Adami said. Mr. Adami opened a dry cleaning store and Mrs. Adami focused on raising the children. She also spent much of her time cooking specialty German dishes.
Mr. Adami died several years ago, Shortly thereafter Mrs. Adami moved to the Masonic Eastern Star Home.
Mrs. Adami was born Rosena Kulp in Philadelphia but her family line goes back to Kulpsville in Montgomery County.
On the day Mrs. Adami and her husband were married, the couple embarked on a trip to Niagara Falls for their honeymoon.
"That was really a super thing to do in those days. The trip might have been 15 hours [by car]," her son said. "They got out of town, which was Broad and Lehigh at the time, and the car broke down. She would tell the story of my father pushing his car in a white suit down Broad Street."
The couple never did make it back to Philadelphia with that car; they had to take the train, Adami said. But for the next 60 years they made it a point to visit Niagara Falls once every decade for their wedding anniversary, he said.
"They did it throughout their 64 years of marriage," Mr. Adami said. "The last year they were there was their 60th anniversary. If they had made it to 70 [years of marriage], they would have gone."
