William Ernest Hannah, 81, of South Plainfield, N.J., passed away peacefully July 9, 2010 at Norwood Terrace in Plainfield. Born in Bemidji, Minn., on Dec. 2, 1928, Bill lived in Hunterdon, Union and Middlesex counties. A graduate of Bloomfield High School and Fairleigh Dickinson University, he went on to a long career in teaching and was awarded the first Governor's Teacher Recognition Award by Thomas Kean in 1986. Bill retired in 1992 after 34 years of teaching math in the Boonton Township and Springfield public schools and then went on to volunteer for AARP and the senior center in South Plainfield. Mr. Hannah is survived by his wife of 51 years, Judith (Hodgkins); sister, Olive (Garland) Hachtmann of Pa.; sister and brother-in-law, Peg and Al Taboada of Maryland, and also by daughter and son-in-law, Jill and Warren Waskiewicz, and grandsons, Michael and Ryan of N.J.; daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Mike McAlevy, and grandsons, Brandon, Cameren, and William Wick, and granddaughter, Amanda McAlevy of Illinois; daughter, Joyce Doria, and grandaughters, Abrianna and Isabella Doria of N.J., and many nieces and nephews. Bill was predeceased by his parents, Ann and Bill Hannah of Bloomfield; older brothers, Stanley and Anfred Garland, and younger brother, Lyle Hannah.
