Relation to the center person (Witt, Living) : ninth great grandfather
Narrative
Gilbert Platt worked as a servant and remained in a low capacity until 1677 when he married well-to-do
widow, Mary Brown Tanner. The marriage was unsatisfactory for both. First Gilbert Platt tried to cheat Mary Brown Tanner out of some land. Then he had a run in with her eldest son, Joseph Tanner, who threw some sticks in his direction. When Gilbert Platt brought the matter to his wife's attention, she promptly called him a lair. Saying she reared her children properly and none could be guilty of such conduct. Joseph, overhearing the accusations, charged Gilbert Platt of slandering him and knocked Gilbert out with a "tobacco stick". The matter went back to the courts. On 28 March 1681 Gilbert Platt resigned his rights to the plantation and left the presence of his wife and her children for good.
